nsitive souls. Stanley is incredibly friendly and sweet, but you can tell he's still figuring out that the world can be a safe and wonderful place. Give him a little time to stretch his legs and settle in, though, and that sensitive boy starts turning into one giant teddy bear. Stanley loves his belly rubs and massages. He has happily flopped down for belly rubs with multiple volunteers, even when two people are hanging out with him at once. Apparently, there is no such thing as too many hands when belly rubs are involved. (See photos below) He also loves his treats. Stanley may take them with his entire giant mouth, but somehow he manages to be incredibly gentle about it. He's basically a very large gentleman who hasn't quite figured out that treats can be taken with just the front part of his mouth. Once Stanley understands what you're asking of him, he walks nicely and checks in beautifully with his person. One volunteer recently twisted her ankle and ended up kneeling on the ground during their walk. Stanley noticed, came right back to her, and laid down beside her. For such a big boy, there is an incredible gentleness about him. Stanley has also done well in multiple dog-to-dog introductions! As always, we recommend thoughtful introductions with any future canine siblings, but he has shown us that he can enjoy the company of other dogs. Stanley is currently very underweight, even at 100 pounds, and could definitely use some good meals, TLC, and a comfortable place to finally settle in. There is something really special about this boy. He's the kind of dog who makes you want to spend more time with him, help him gain confidence, and watch his personality continue to blossom. He just needs a patient, loving person willing to show a sensitive older boy that he's safe, loved, and finally home. Stanley has already made quite an impression on the volunteers getting to know him, and we can't wait to see more of this gentle giant emerge. If you have room in your home, and maybe quite a bit of room on your couch, for a big, sensitive sweetheart, come meet Stanley by making an appointment at yoloshelter/dogs, or email adoptyoloshelter.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
