e home where she can settle back into the comfort and routine of home life. Bonnie is house trained, active, intelligent, and accustomed to having a full life with plenty of walks and activity. She loves exploring local trails and ponds, has regularly gone out with a dog walker, and has attended dog daycare. She is looking for an experienced person who understands that beneath some of her nervous behaviors is a dog who needs consistency, confidence, and time to trust. Life With Bonnie Bonnie loves her walks and enjoys getting outside. She is leash trained and responds well to consistent handling and a "leave it" command. She is also familiar with an e-collar and muzzle. Bonnie enjoys other dogs and has successfully spent time walking and playing off leash with canine friends. She can be a rough player, however, and she can become reactive when passing dogs while on leash. There was also a previous incident in which Bonnie nipped at another dog's neck, potentially during overly rough play. Because of this, an only-dog home would be the simplest and preferred placement for Bonnie, although an experienced home with an appropriate resident dog may be considered following careful introductions. Her history with cats is unknown. Bonnie and People Bonnie can be timid around unfamiliar people and needs introductions to happen on her terms. She has displayed fear-based behaviors when strangers enter the home or approach her while she is on leash, including growling. There has been one bite incident involving a veterinary technician who attempted to take control of her leash, resulting in broken skin. Bonnie isn't a dog who wants strangers immediately entering her space. She needs a person who can read her body language, advocate for her boundaries, and give her the opportunity to become comfortable without being rushed. For stressful veterinary appointments, Bonnie has an established medication protocol using trazodone and gabapentin that has been effective in managing her anxiety. Her experience with children is limited. She has played appropriately outside with an 8-year-old child, but because she can be timid and has demonstrated fear-based responses toward unfamiliar people, we feel an adult-only home would be the best fit. Medical Information Bonnie is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations. She has been experiencing intermittent urinary incontinence, primarily while sleeping or following increased water consumption. This is currently being evaluated by a veterinarian. Her foster or adopter will need to be understanding of occasional accidents while we determine the cause and appropriate treatment. The Home Bonnie Needs Bonnie isn't going to be the right dog for every home, and that's okay. She needs someone experienced with large dogs who understands that nervous dogs need advocacy, structure, and patience—not pressure. Give Bonnie the opportunity to know you. Give her predictable routines and clear expectations. Take her for the walks she loves, respect her boundaries when she's uncertain, and give her time to understand that she's safe. Bonnie is currently in boarding and needs a foster or adopter as soon as possible. We would love to see her in a quieter, predictable home where she can settle in and build a relationship with someone who understands her. Bonnie doesn't need everyone to be her person. She just needs the right person to be hers. If you can foster or adopt Bonnie, please complete an application as soon as possible. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
