our rescued pets go to their forever home and never end up back in the system. To that end, an application is required on all potential adopters. Our adoption fee varies by dog. We accept electronic funds via VENMO or Zelle, or cash only. donateyorkierescuehouston or, if you prefer: our fundraising platform, Zeffy Puppies too young to be spayed/neutered are available for Foster-to-Adopt only. A FTA contract is required. Lulu may have a delicate name, but this little guy has already proven he is one tough Yorkie. At approximately 7 years old and just 7.4 pounds, Lulu came to Yorkie Rescue Houston after his family sought euthanasia because of a severe injury to his right eye. The veterinary record notes that the cost of the surgery he needed was more than his family could manage. Instead of Lulu’s story ending there, he got his second chance. Lulu’s injured eye could not be saved, so he underwent an enucleation to remove the right eye. While he was under anesthesia, he was also neutered and received desperately needed dental care. His dental disease was rated Stage 5/5, and 17 teeth were extracted during his procedure. His initial bloodwork also showed significant anemia along with changes consistent with inflammation. Lulu was started on an iron/vitamin supplement and antibiotics as part of his treatment and recovery. His chemistry panel—including kidney and liver values—was largely within the laboratory’s listed reference ranges. That sounds like a lot for one tiny dog—and it is. But Lulu is getting something now that every dog deserves: the chance to heal. Losing an eye does not mean losing a happy life. Dogs adapt remarkably well to having one eye, and Lulu’s missing eye is simply going to become one small part of his story—not the thing that defines him. What Lulu needs next is a family who understands that rescue is sometimes a process. He has been through pain, major surgery, and enormous change in a very short period of time. His perfect home will give him the patience, security, and affection he needs while he continues recovering and learning that he is finally safe. Lulu didn’t need his life to end. He needed someone willing to fight for it. Yorkie Rescue Houston did. Now we’re looking for the person who will make sure Lulu never needs rescuing again.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
