dy to steal your heart. These bonded best friends have spent years together, and they’re hoping to find a forever home where they can continue their next chapter side by side. Chase is a handsome 9.5-year-old black Labrador Retriever weighing about 80 pounds, while Maci is an adorable 8.5-year-old Dachshund weighing just 13 pounds. Despite the size difference, these two are inseparable and complement each other perfectly. Chase’s greatest love in life is tennis balls. A few short games of fetch each day make him one happy pup, and watching his excitement over a tennis ball is guaranteed to make you smile. Maci occasionally decides the ball belongs to her and will cleverly “hide” it away in her blanket for safekeeping. When she’s not supervising tennis ball operations, Maci’s favorite place is snuggled under a blanket next to her favorite human. Both dogs are deeply affectionate and very people-oriented. They want nothing more than to be near their humans, whether that means following you from room to room, curling up beside you, or requesting another round of pets. They can be a little insistent about making sure they get their share of attention, but they are learning quickly that sometimes it’s time to settle down and relax nearby instead. Maci is making excellent progress with house-training in foster care. She came into her current foster home needing significant help in this area, but with a consistent routine, supervision, and rewards for going outside, she has improved tremendously in just a few weeks. Her future family should be prepared to continue reinforcing those good habits as she adjusts to a new home. Maci can also be wary and reactive when first meeting unfamiliar men, so slow, thoughtful introductions are important. Once she decides you’re a friend, though, she is extraordinarily affectionate and devoted. Her foster dad went from being a suspicious stranger to one of her favorite people in about an hour! Her experience with children is not yet known. Chase and Maci can also become anxious when separated from their people and may bark to let you know they’d rather be wherever you are. This has improved considerably as they’ve settled into foster care and learned that their person always comes back, but their ideal family will appreciate just how people-oriented these two are and be willing to continue helping them become more comfortable settling independently. Both dogs have responded beautifully to structure, consistency, and gentle boundaries. In just a short time in foster care, they’ve become better at settling on their own, Maci has made tremendous strides in house-training, and they’ve shown how quickly they can learn what is expected of them. It’s clear Chase and Maci have known love before, and they have plenty left to give. Their ideal home will be one that wants two genuinely devoted companions and is prepared to give them the consistency, patience, affection, and structure that help them thrive. Senior dogs have a special way of appreciating life’s simple joys, and Chase and Maci are no exception. They are sweet, funny, deeply affectionate companions who are ready to bring an enormous amount of warmth and love to the right forever home. If you are interested in Chase and Maci, fill out an application at this link to get the ball rolling - pethavenmn/adopt/adoptable-dogs/dog-adoption-application/ The adoption fee is $450 for both dogs. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
