tle body. Penny has IVDD and is paralyzed in her back legs, but please don’t tell her she’s supposed to let that slow her down - she certainly didn’t get the memo. Penny maneuvers around the house incredibly well on her own and has a wheelchair that she LOVES for walks and adventures. She also rides beautifully in the car, making her the perfect little copilot for someone who wants a sidekick to tag along. When Penny first meets someone, she can be a little nervous and needs a moment to decide whether you’re worthy of joining her inner circle. Fortunately, the application process is pretty quick. Once she warms up, Penny is an affectionate little Stage 5 Clinger who wants nothing more than to be close to her people. Couch? She’s there. Bed? Obviously. Going to another room for 30 seconds? Penny would like to know why she wasn’t consulted. Because Penny loves her humans so much, her ideal home would be one where someone is around fairly often. She tolerates a crate when necessary, but if Penny were writing this profile herself, she would like it formally documented that she does not recommend crates and feels there are much better places to spend her time - preferably wherever you are. Other dogs? Yes! Penny does well with other dogs when given slow, structured introductions that allow her to feel safe and comfortable. Cats? Also yes. Penny currently lives with a household cat and mostly ignores him. He believes he runs the house, and Penny has apparently decided it isn’t worth the paperwork to challenge him. Because of her paralysis, Penny does not have control over when she urinates or has a bowel movement. She needs her bladder expressed, but she is very easy to express, and she and her foster family have her routine down to a science. Once you learn her schedule and care routine, it simply becomes part of the day. What Penny needs may look a little different from the average dog, but what she wants is incredibly simple: Her people nearby A comfy place to snuggle Walks in her wheels Car rides and adventures Patience while she gets to know you Someone who will love her exactly as she is Penny doesn’t know that she’s a “special needs dog.” She knows that she can get where she wants to go, that her wheelchair means ADVENTURE, and that humans were clearly invented for cuddling. If you’ve been looking for a loyal little shadow with a whole lot of personality, Penny might just be your girl.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
