de County animal shelter in Coachella Valley, he was 7 lbs at that point (7/30/26). I adopted him as a medical waiver pup as the shelter had him red listed for having hives and being emaciated. Copper has a very playful personality. He definitely is still a puppy, but is a bit obsessed with mounting and trying to be on top. I think he would do well with another active dog that loves to rough house. He loves to play with my 5 month old kittens, but is getting too much for them too. I sent out a dna test that is pending so whoever adopts him can know what kind of mix they're getting. He had a food aggression issue when he first came as a starving skinny puppy, but that has been resolved as he has gained weight and been given access freely to food. He does still have some issues with resource guarding of high value toys and chews. He didn't know what grass was initially, and now he just loves to sit in my herb beds of oregano and sage and munch on it. He has met a lot of different people on outings to pet stores and at home. He has done well with intros to everyone even a toddler. He does seem to favor men. He loves everyone, but when my dad comes over he lights up and gets so excited. So, a home with an active family that has a man that loves to play with him would be ideal. I got him a flirt pole to use on days when I can't walk him (too hot, etc) and he loves it. I would be happy to put together a care pack of all of his favorite things for the adopter. His other remaining issue is the payful hand nipping, but that is pretty common for puppies. His "mouthiness" has much improved in recent weeks. He is neutered, microchipped, and has had his rabies, bordetella, and 2 of the dapp vaccines. I plan to get his 3rd next week so he will have all 3. Foster is located in Yucaipa, but would be happy to transport him to his future home. This puppy needs a home where someone is around to help him continue to mature and grow up. dachshundrescueoflosangeles/adoption-application

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
