Petite Sweet Betsy has been through so much since the spring of 2019. She was dumped in a shelter and was simply terrified, heartbroken, and sad. Then she had her Kentucky foster mom who was great. In that foster scenario, Betsy had her little white fluffy best friend Miffy to pal around with happily. Both Betsy and Miffy came up together from KY, but initially went to different NJ fosters. Betsy and her first NJ foster bonded well but in their huge and busy home her fear of the ever-changing traffic, especially males, was insurmountable. Heartbroken, NJ foster Mom number one brought Betsy to Mom number two. That was stressful for Betsy but her best friend Miffy was in this foster home which was a comfort. Unfortunately, there was a big grouchy foster dog who bit her in the neck for coming near the couch. Right after that bite, dear Miffy was adopted (they didn't want two dogs). Betsy’s neck has since healed, but rather than allow that to repeat, Betsy went to foster Mom number three who will keep her until her forever family finds her. If you are still reading, we hope it is you, or that you can share this message. Now that Betsy is in her third NJ foster, she is best friends with another white small female dog, but she is still very vulnerable and nervous around new people and men. She is getting socialization experience every day and lots of petting. She spends some time in a crate which helps her feel safe. The resident dog Baby Doll helps her feel safe. She may have suffered some physical and emotional abuse in her past. She feels confident with the adult female mother figure in the house, but she needs stability. Her big honey colored eyes tell you that she wants to trust and that she will trust that special person. She gets along well with other dogs and even puppies. She loves to play. She is potty, crate and leash trained. Petite Betsy looks like a puppy with those enormous eyes and small 16-pound frame but is fully grown. Betsy just needs a patient woman to open her heart to her and she will give back endless love and affection; she is just so incredibly sweet. She is updated on all her shots, spayed, and energetically healthy. To adopt Betsy please visit .peace4paws and fill out an adoption application. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
