Have a question? Please read our Frequently Asked Questions and Adoption Processed Explained documentation. Statistics Name: Lightning Breed: Chihuahua - Rat Terrier Mix Age: 7 Years Size: Small 15 lbs. ~Small range: up to 25 lbs Adoption Donation: $180 (applicable sales tax included). Adoption fees may be paid with cash or check. Other: Neutered Male, Vaccinations current, Microchip, Older considerate children (Over 12 yrs. old), ** Also see info in Foster home Feedback Lightning is in need of your TLC; Love him! Foster Home Feedback * Older considerate children (over 12) ** When Lightning came to Rescue he had extremely painful eyes and vision loss associated with untreated, uncontrolled Glaucoma. His vision loss is permanent, but thanks to a dedicated veterinary team (and his equally dedicated foster!) Lightning's glaucoma is under control. He will need to have eye drops for the rest of his life. Adopter(s) will be responsible to refill these medications once the supply 4 Luv of Dog furnishes to them runs out; the cost of these drops are around $50/month. Without this medication, Lightning's eye pressures will increase and he will be in a lot of pain-- any adopter(s) for Lightning will need to be committed to his ongoing eye care. 8/19/17: Hi, I'm just relaxing with my BF Daisy. We just got back from a walk. Now we are chillin' on the deck. I think Daisy has a crush on me. Well, how can she not? Just look how handsome I am! I'm also up for adoption! 5/22/17: Hi, I'm Lightning. I love head scratches & belly rubs; they make me smile. My favorite spot to snooze is under my blanket, on the couch or a bed. I'd do best with older children because if I'm startled, I get scared. I can't see very well, but my daily eye drops ** (See above) help my eyes feel better. It doesn't slow me down from playing with my "foster" siblings! I am house trained, I haven't met any cats yet, AND I know how to "sit" & "lay". My favorite toys are soft ones. While you are out, I can stay in the kennel or just hang out on the couch, under my blanket. 12/13/16: Lightning is a very sweet little man that LOVES to snuggle. He is housebroken and kennel trained. Due to his sight problems, he should go to a home that understands his needs and will go slow around him. He startles easily so a house with young children is not ideal. He is dog-friendly with both small and large dogs but should be around those who respect his space and his shy laid back manner. His favorite place to sleep and hang out is under a nice large plush blanket. To view additional dogs available for adoption, please see our website: www.4luvofdog.org

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
