he "Wonder Twins"! This Bonded Pair, Herbie and Kelle were found together wandering the hot streets of Texas all alone taking care of each other until a nice lady came along, stopped her car and coaxed us to her- That was the best day of their life's and it just keeps getting better. We believe these two are between the ages of 1-2 years old. They appear to be brother and sister. The male, Herbie, is about 10 lbs and the female, Kelle, is about 15lbs. Kelle is also taller than Herbie. Manners: Herbie and Kelle are both crate trained. They have started to go into the kennel on their own when we say “kennel” or “bedtime.” I’m sure they would do fine outside of their crate at bedtime if they were sleeping by their owners, but we do not do this as we are unsure of how the forever home will be. They do sleep through the night as well without any accidents. Herbie and Kelle eat well and do not compete for their food. They sleep together and snuggle together when outside of the kennel. Herbie is usually following Kelle around and looks to her for guidance. He has ventured off on his own at times as well. Herbie and Kelle are great with kids and other dogs. They have the tendency to chase after our cat, but they don’t hurt her. They are just trying to play. Both of them are still potty training. They are catching on after watching our dogs, but do not alert us when they need to go. The first time they meet new people they are a bit skittish, but do warm up. If we attempt to pick them up, they still appear to be afraid, but start to relax when we are snuggling with them as we hold them. Activity Level: Herbie and Kelle are super playful and are masters at getting the squeakers out of toys…so buy nylabones! They love those! They are not as wild as puppies are and will lay down to rest/chew on nylabones. Kelle and Herbie love to lay by foster mom/dad. Sometimes even the kids if they are lying on the couch. Foster Mom notes: Herbie and Kelle are so cute together and seem to be inseparable, which is why they are listed as a bonded pair. I would hate to see these two split up since Herbie really looks up to Kelle and Kelle protects him. They love being in a home with so many other dogs to play with and love the unlimited toys in the house. I think they would love to sleep in bed by me and snuggle all night, but since I’m not sure there new owners will allow that we have been crate training. These two are just so sweet and loveable….if only we had a bigger house! If you would like to meet/adopt this dog you Must Submit an Application which is on our website under Adoption Process. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
