o, and you will find the link to do our online Adoption Application which is the first step in our Adoption Process! Please read ALL below where you will find answers about the pet, our adoption fees and how to do our adoption application! Pet Description: Bella is a two-year old female Red Heeler, came to us when the family moved to a new home and she couldn't go. She is 43 lbs. We were told she is good with dogs, cats & children and here in the Shelter that is definitely the case. And, she came in with a much younger female dog and no issues there. BUT, when she went to a home (adopted), she proved very different and the interactions with the other dog in the home was not good and also not good with a cat. So, first we are going to just say no to cats. Second, she is just going to have to meet any potential dog buddy or be the only dog. Even though she kennels with females here fine, it was a female dog she did not do well with. Perhaps a larger male and her would work - bit challenging to say for sure. She seemed to very quickly become bonded to a person in the house and perhaps that is the issue - she maybe then doesn't want to share that person when she is in a HOME. Here in the Shelter there have just been zero issues ever. Given all of this, let's say an experienced Heeler owner may be best as they are wonderful dogs but strong-willed indeed. Bella is supposed to be housetrained and crate trained and loves to play fetch. DOG ADOPTION FEE is $100. This Adoption fee includes: mandatory spay/neuter which will be done before you can take your dog or puppy home with you; basic canine immunizations (DHPP-CPV & Bordatella Intranasal); de-wormings; one-year rabies vaccination if old enough; heartworm test if over five months old; microchip from 24-Pet Watch; certificate for free health examination at your participating veterinarian; and a goodie bag chocked full of information, toys, and more. (If a dog is sponsored or has a waived or lower fee, that info will be provided at the point of adoption to the approved adopter). The first step is to our Adoption Application here: elmorehumane/adoption-application-online-form2.html . IMPORTANT – we respond to your emailed applications and queries via email back to you. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
