mily for 5 weeks and is now ready for his forever home. He came to us with some food aggression and trust issues. With lots of love and structure, we are happy to report that he is overcoming these issues! He now understands that there is plenty of food to go around, and he even sits on his foster mom's lap while she works on the computer. He will even come over for hugs and kisses now! Bear is very high energy and loves to play with toys and other dogs. He currently lives with two foster brother dogs. They spend hours running and playing with each other. He has also never met a toy he didn't like! He is learning to sit quietly and play with his toys. This boy is wicked smart! He sits patiently for his meals, can shake hands and lay down. It took no time at all to teach him these commands. He is very treat motivated and loves to learn new things. However, he does not beg for people food when you are having dinner. Bear is crate trained and housebroken. However, he will not go to the door to alert you, so when not in his kennel, he needs to go out every couple of hours to ensure no accidents. He will need to be crated when you leave the house, as he is very curious and can get into things. He sleeps in his kennel with no issues. Bear's ideal family is active and will include him in your daily routine. Due to his activity level, he would be best suited for a family that has experience with dogs, or one that is willing to take him to obedience training classes. He would be a perfect partner for hiking or agility training! Due to his puppy antics and size, he would be best suited to a home with older children or adults. Cats and small dogs are unknown. Bear needs a family with patience and perseverance, who can help him expend his energy in positive ways. He needs daily exercise and lots of play time. He walks very well on lead. He has been to doggie daycare several times and gets along very well with the other dogs. Bear is still a big puppy and has all the usual puppy traits, such as curiosity in all things and learning his boundaries. This boy will make a fantastic addition to a loving family that has the time and energy for him. Bear is waiting patiently for you to fill out an application and schedule a meet and greet! Our pets are fostered in volunteers' homes, not at a shelter facility. Please call our Adoption Center to schedule a meet and greet: 502 863-3279. Or send an inquiry via this website. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
