with Cats: good Observations with Kids: good but cannot go to a home with children under 10 years Currently Living at: DC area foster home ADOPTION PENDING!!! ADOPTION PENDING!!! ADOPTION PENDING!!! ADOPTION PENDING!!! Meet majestic Gulliver! He is 115 lbs of joyful love and slobber. Surrendered at a SC shelter for not getting along with the resident dogs, Gulliver quickly proved that he is indeed good with most dogs... sometimes dogs just need a proper introduction. He's even good with cats! Gulliver is still somewhat of a puppy, but he is very treat motivated and smart, so training him should be a breeze. He already knows numerous commands after just a few days in a foster home. Gulliver is a tad bit underweight if you can believe it, and we need to note that he is a bit of a resource guarder with food. Given his size, he needs an experienced adopter who will agree to work with a DC PAWS approved positive reinforcement trainer to address that issue and to generally teach him how to be a gentleman. This pup is a rare rescue find (well, perhaps not THAT rare), and his previous guardian's loss can be your gain. Please note that we anticipate A LOT of interest in this guy and we may not be able to respond to each application right away; we are an all-volunteer rescue of individuals with full time jobs and do our best to be responsive, but sometimes it can be overwhelming with popular breeds like this one. Our goal is to find a home and family that are the best fit for Gulliver, and vice versa. As such, applications will not necessarily be considered on a first come, first served basis. That being said, we anticipate a good match will be found quickly, but we always encourage applications since you never know when applications may fall through. Like most shelter dogs, Gulliver may need a refresher on housetraining and crate training. We ask all of DC PAWS’ fosters to work on both house and crate training with their foster dog. The adoption fee for this dog is $350. If you are interested in adopting Gulliver, please submit an adoption application at dcpawsrescue/adoption-info/adoption-application-dogs/DC PAWS Rescue does our best to provide accurate and complete information about our adoptable animals. Please note that we cannot make any guarantees about age or breed; we rely upon our rescue partners and their veterinarians to make those assessments. We also cannot make any guarantees about housebreaking and animal temperament, as animals can behave differently through transition and in different environments. Our shelter partners provide a basic vet screening for each animal we rescue, which includes necessary vaccinations, deworming, microchipping, and spay/neuter (unless the animal is too young or otherwise deemed by the vet to not be a good candidate for surgery). Please note that this is not a comprehensive medical exam and as such, may not identify any and all medical issues, though our goal is to flag any obvious health issues through the basic vet screening. We share all medical records with adopters and flag any known issues prior to adoption finalization. About DC PAWS Rescue Our rescue is an all-volunteer, foster-based dog and cat rescue in the DC area. We rescue from rural shelters in the south, as well as local DC area shelters, such as Prince Georges County, MD and BARCS in MD. BE A FOSTER: Fosters make it possible for DC PAWS to save and care for homeless, neglected and abandoned animals! Sponsors help us provide critical medical care, food, boarding and other support for animals facing euthanasia. Individuals who sponsor a dog or cat receive special recognition on the animal's profile.  Sponsorships can also be made in honor or memory of a loved one, and you may designate to whom DC Paws Rescue should provide notice of your gift. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
