RESTED IN ADOPTING THE FIRST STEP IS TO FILL OUT AN ADOPTION APPLICATION ON OUR WEBSITE AT: .caninecastaways/adoption-application IF A PET IS LISTED THEN THEY ARE AVAILABLE - WE KEEP OUR LISTINGS UP TO DATE AND REMOVE AS SOON AS ADOPTED. We do require that you have recent verifiable dog/puppy history in order to be considered for adoption NAME: Ozzy BREED: see DNA sheet in photos SEX: male COLOR: tan AGE: 3 yrs as of Nov 2023 WEIGHT: 22 lbs FOSTERED BY: LOCATED IN: Arcadia NOTES FROM FOSTER FAMILY: Once upon a time in a town not far away was born a little golden dog. Most animals have mommy’s and daddy’s to show them the way, but this little golden dog was all alone with no mommy or daddy to call his own. He navigated the cold hard streets with courage on his face but fear in his heart. He learned to be independent and self sufficient as he fought to survive. The humans would shoo him away from garbage cans, not realizing that he meant them no harm. All he wanted was any scrap of leftovers to ease the growling in his stomach. He wondered how long it had been since he had eaten as he walked the streets alone and starving. When just ahead a glimmer of hope, could it be? A crust of bread in the middle of the path! He ran with all the energy he could muster but then out of nowhere came a cat after this some morsel of food. They fought hard both yearning for this little piece of food to keep them alive another day. Unbeknownst to him a human called in the fight and the next thing he knew, he was being taken away in one of those loud fast things with wheels that he learned to avoid. Hungry cold and scared he barked with all his might wishing they would leave him be, not realizing that this was the beginning to a new start for him. You see he had never been helped before so he didn’t know what help was. As the humans cleaned him he shivered in fear not knowing what would come next. He was pleasantly surprised when they gave him a name Ozzy and gave him plenty to eat. Still scared but no longer alone he began to settle into this new place. He didn’t really know what to think of the other dogs or people, but he was happy to have a full belly for the first time in a long time. One day Ozzy got a foster parent and seven other dogs. Still scared, he stayed by himself except when the food came out he was happy for that part. Ozzy has learned what it means to be a dog and a pet. He’s learned to love and be loved but he’s still scared of new people. He’s come a long way but still plays too rough sometimes so we are hoping he’ll be an only pet somewhere. He has made huge progress but still has some food issues and scavenges for whatever he can find. He’s slow to get to know people but if you have snacks he’s willing to work with you. He’s looking for someone to love that will love him back (and share their food). Will you be his happily ever after? Ozzy is a active boy that is going to need some love, patience, and training. He does well on a leash and is very food motivated. Will need work with house training. He hasn’t learned to play with toys or other dogs yet. Ozzy does like to be the center of attention and could be best as an only dog. NOTES ON OZZY: -no cats -was picked up as a stray after incident with a cat -needs continued training to learn doggy manners -energetic -prefers the ac to extended outside time -ok with some dogs but selective - likely best if he is an only dog. SEE EMBARK DNA TEST RESULTS IN PHOTO At this time, we will only be able to process applications that have an excellent current vet history. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
