their owner went into assisted living. The son-in-law of the owner had been caring for them for two years in the vacant home of their owner... visiting them every day. Their owner struggled with letting them go but finally realized it was not fair to them or to her son-in-law and relented in letting her daughter and son-in-law find a new home for them. This is where we come in. Baloo and Mowgli came to us today and came in wagging their tails and excited to see new people and meet new doggies. Baloo and Mowgli are potty pad trained and will go outdoors to do their business as well. They travel well and we will work on the leash training because they haven't been on a leash in a while. They are responsive and listen well. Mowgli is very afraid of bad weather. Baloo (the bigger of the two) is not. We would like to find them a home together and the adoption fee will be reduced if they are adopted as a pair. IF they are with us too long, we will find it necessary to adopt them out separately. We'd rather them find a great home than stay at our rescue for too long. Most dogs do quite well separated. These two may make new friends and not be as bonded as they appear to be right now. Time will tell... but for now... they are to be adopted together. They have been well cared for their entire lives. They are neutered, UTD on vaccinations, heartworm negative and microchipped. More pics and a full write-up will be posted in the next few days. Adoption fee $250 (as bonded pair), which includes microchipping and enrollment fee. (If we separate them... the adoption fee will be $170 each.) To pre-apply, click here: http://www.roadtorescuela.org/dog-application Only adopters with a responsible dog ownership history, along with an excellent vet reference need apply. **IMPORTANT NOTES** *All of our adoptable dogs are small, and they are never to be left outside alone, ever! We only rehome our dogs to adopters that plan to have them as inside dogs and part of the family! We do allow adopters with doggie doors, provided there is SECURE fencing. There is no exception to this rule! *NO SMALL CHILDREN!! As with almost all the dogs at NR2R, young children or a very active household is not recommended. Many of our dogs come to us BECAUSE of small children, thus we do not rehome our dogs to homes with babies or young children. Even if the children are older, it would depend on the child AND the parent or parents. *We do not guarantee that any of our adoptable dogs are housetrained. While most should be easily trained, keep in mind that they live in a rescue where they have access to the outdoors all day and are inside at night. Even if they were surrendered to us as housetrained, it doesn’t mean they will automatically be housetrained in your home. Housetraining them should be easy in the right home with time, patience, and consistency. *Only adopters with a responsible dog ownership history and excellent vet reference need apply. If you bring this pet into your heart and home, you will receive in return many years of love, companionship, and loyalty. That’s our guarantee.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
