n we rescued this lil nugget, she seemed all of her 7 years and more (okay, a lot more). Underweight, Potato also had a stone bigger than a golf ball taking up the entirety of her bladder (and those things don’t grow overnight). She walked with extreme difficulty, all hunched over, inching her way along. She strained to go potty every few steps but there were only blood-tinged drops. We were horrified that someone could let this dog suffer like this for so long. On top of that, her left eye was severely ulcerated and cloudy and we weren’t sure if she’d be able to keep it. Thanks to our WDR donors and amazing medical teams however, we were able to save her vision, remove the giant stone and a few dozen smaller ones, and provide her with a much needed dental for her infected grill. Now fully recovered and feeling like a million bucks, our gentle yet lively 9 pound shih-tzu lady has a new lease on life and is more than ready to find her furever home! The best part about getting to know Potato is seeing how much she transformed with proper care and nutrition. Once a severely neglected and suffering dog, she’s absolutely blossomed into a whole new animal. Potato loves to play with dogs, cats, even tortoises, and she’s so excited to meet new people, kids and animal-friends. We call her the ‘Bumble-bee’ because she’ll flit from person to person, almost like she’s hostessing the party! Potato is housebroken, crate trained, has good leash manners (though she does like to stop and sniff the flowers - who can blame her?), and is always ready for car rides. She’s responsive to vocal correction but rarely needs it once you’ve established your leadership. Little Tater enjoys walks but doesn’t need much exercise. Playing with people and animal pals is all the entertainment she needs, though she’s fine to be home alone while you’re out and about (but not left alone all day - she’s a social little lady!). What we love about Potato: She’ll lay at your feet while you’re working or otherwise occupied. She loves to sleep in. She adores her stuffed toys and will chase them and growl and shake them with much fierceness (it’s hilarious!). Potato also likes to play practical jokes - she steals dirty laundry and keeps it in her bed. Hey, at least you always know where to find your missing socks. We love this girl! Don’t you? If you’re ready to love Potato as much as we do, let us know! Southern California adopters only please! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
