Breed: ShihTzu/ Lhasa Apso Color:White Weight: 18lbs Age: 8 and in excellent health The time has come for us to find an incredibly loving home for our dog, Miana. Before I say all of the wonderful things about her, I’ll first say: I rescued Miana from a shelter 6 years ago… prior to that, she had been abused for 2 years until she was surrendered, therefore she has difficulty in some situations. We will only consider experienced dog owners who understand dog behavior and are willing to commit time to training. She finds comfort in structure and boundaries… and a warm lap to curl up on! Miana forms tight bonds with her immediate family, and in this environment, is the perfect dog (more on this later). Miana is fearful of strangers and protective of her family and home, and when she perceives a threat it manifests itself with fear-based aggression. She has never bitten anyone. Through extensive training, she has improved remarkably (she has a trainer who will provide in-home training services for Miana’s entire lifespan which will transfer to her new owners at no cost to you). Through specific techniques, she is able to meet new people without issue and once she trusts you, will love you for life. So why are we considering such a heartbreaking decision? We have an 11-month old baby who in just a few months will be full of sudden moves and loud screams, none of which Miana enjoys. We are being proactive and avoiding a potential situation that puts our baby at risk of injury and has Miana living in an environment which causes her anxiety. If you have small children in your home, Miana is not a good fit for your family. Ok, now the good part: She’s respectful of our home, is such a cuddlebug, and is in perfect health. She is exceptionally potty trained (she’ll hold it for 12 hours), doesn’t chew on anything that isn’t her toy, and is nonshedding. She is also quiet – only giving a gruff if she hears someone walking by outside to alert you. As a Lhasa Apso, she is a great choice for older people because she is low energy and does not require more than two short walks a day for a potty break (although she’ll gladly go on a long one and does love jogging with me)! Her favorite activities are lying on the couch, gently playing with one of her many toys, doing dog treat puzzles, and getting a good tummy rub. She has never had any major medical issues, is microchipped, and does eat prescription food to avoid UTI’s (don’t worry, it’s not more expensive than a good quality store-bought dog food! A 17lb bag costs $50 and lasts her 2 months). We would also like an “open adoption” whereby her new family can contact us with any questions and you can share photos and stories of how she is doing with us. To ensure our sweet girl is placed in a safe and loving environment, home visits are a requirement. If you are interested, please email Lauren at whitedogcouture@yahoo.com Thank you!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
