can't wait to take with you. Well, my name's Puppy, and I'm an all-purpose pup ready to commit 110 percent. When there's a crumb dropped, I'll be there to pick it up for you. When there's a hole that needs to be dug, I'll be there with all four feet. When someone needs a buddy to run miles with, I'll be there with leash in tow. Commit 110 percent to me, and I'll be yours forever. I'm ten months old, and just like human toddlers I have a lot of energy, that keeps me going for most of the day. Though who can blame me when there are some many neat things to play with, such as balls, fleece toys, rawhides, socks, all different types of dog toys, and plastic water bottles that make a fun crunchy sound when you chew on them! Just like human toddlers, I need someone who will be willing to put in the time, training, patience and effort to help me learn things I haven't yet been taught. In fact, some of the things I need help learning is to not jump up on people, to walk without pulling or chewing/tugging on the leash, to improve my listening and attention skills, to learn what I can and cannot chew on, and work on potty training, and just some of the basic commands and manners. I was only ever an outside dog in my previous home, and would prefer being an outside dog in my next home as well. I had free roam in a fenced in yard, and absolutely hated when my previous owner tried to tether me. You will have to make sure a sure fence though, because if there is a big enough hole where I can get my head through it, I will find a way to squeeze my whole body through. If you are wanting to make me an indoor dog the majority of the time, it is going to take some time, training, and effort me to transition. I lived with four small kiddos in my previous home and absolutely loved and protected them. I lived with my mom in my last home and was friendly with her, though I haven't done so well with other dogs during meet and greets since being here at CHHS. If I sound like the kind of dog you been searching for, then come on down today so we can start the next chapter of our lives together.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
