dog. She adores walks and trots along with her bushy tail bouncing in the air. She walks perfectly on a leash. She loves car rides, going to the dog park, and running errands with you! She can be a little shy at first, but really loves neck scratches and hanging out with you in the kitchen or while reading in the living room. She will "husky talk" on occasion, mostly when she is excited. She is very submissive and as a result sometimes gets picked on by other dogs who are more outgoing and energetic , so may be happier with an equally mellow dog if she would have a playmate. She knows the word "come" or if you call her name she runs over whenever called. Ava is great with other dogs and people of all ages - she's very gentle. She even likes cats!! She loves treats, but isn't much for toys these days. Ava is diabetic so she gets her insulin twice a day but takes it very nicely- she knows there's a treat waiting for her afterwards! For being a diabetic, an adopter will only have to pay an additional $50-100 per month to take care of this sweet girl! Walmart appears the most affordable for her insulin supply needs. She is completely kennel and house trained! She prances and does a little dance when she's excited, especially at mealtimes. She likes to sit nearby during dinnertime. Her vision isn't wonderful but her senses are good otherwise, and she is very in tune with sounds. She just needs to learn where her kennel is kept to go there when you ask, etc. She loves hanging out outside in the shade while you do yard work or garden. She does well with being carried on stairs, etc and isn't afraid of thunderstorms. She would be a great addition to your family if you want a super sweet, gentle, mellow yet spunky companion! Interested in adopting this lovable animal? Please go to our website www.wagsmn.org and fill out an Adoption Application. Once the application is processed, a Wags representative will contact you, answer any questions you may have, and set up a time/location for a meet and greet! A home visit is required prior to adoption. Wags & Whiskers adopts animals within a 60 mile radius of the Twin Cities or a 30 minute radius of Duluth, Rochester, and Mankato. Thank you for choosing to adopt! Breed and temperament determination: Wags & Whiskers Animal Rescue attempts to determine breed and temperament using a combination of looks, information provided to us at intake, and our experience with the animal while in our Rescue. We do not guarantee this determination.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
