thing my foster family has ever seen. They joke that I am part pig, part pygmy hippo due to my slight snorting (its adorable admit it!), my large head, muscular body, and tiny legs. Don't let my pictures fool you I am a short stack!! I may be all muscle but I also only weigh 48 pounds. I am a southern boy at heart; I came up from a shelter in Alabama so not much is known about my previous life. I was clearly a pet at one point in time as I know basic commands, I'm crate and house trained, and I have no problem with things such as stairs, cars, ignoring chewing temptations such as shoes and remotes, etc. (Although, like many dogs, I am not a fan of the vacuum. Scary stuff right there.) I'm told many dogs when placed in a home for the first time have to learn to deal with all these human things but I am a pro. I am a happy guy that enjoys bones, walks, playing tug of war, and ANY type of toy that squeaks. I don't want to toot my own horn but I am pretty amazing on a leash. I only pull when I see a squirrel. I am working on learning to ignore them but they are just so interesting! I have yet to meet a stranger; in fact I want to be best friends with everyone I meet. I'm great at ignoring the cats that reside with me even when they walk by my food and water dish! I have even learned to walk over them (instead of on them) when they are in my way! The bird in the household is fascinating but I don't even notice him anymore. In fact I am so great at ignoring him I am pretty sure I forgot he is even there. I love people and can never say no to a good chin rub! I am very friendly, goofy, and playful, and I am working on my playing manners. No one taught me how to play wrestle so I can get a bit rambunctious! I'm getting better every day but I am told I will need someone who can keep the consistency going for me. Typical of my breed, I am told I can be stubborn at times. Unfortunately for me I am so treat motivated I will do anything you want when presented with one. So its easy to get around my stubbornness- I fear it is getting weaker and weaker by the day. Due to my lack of doggy play manners, I would probably flourish best in a home where I am the only dog- who wants to share attention anyways?? I like dogs and get along with them, but I just don't do well with playing with them. Again I get too rambunctious and I tend to be a bit much for most dogs. I currently live with two other dogs so it's not a deal breaker, but again I need someone who can be my leader. Just like children I thrive on rules and routine. If you are looking for a fun, handsome, goofy sweet dog than I am your guy! In the meantime if you have questions or are interested in me, please fill out an adoption application at .ruffstartrescue. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal. Once we receive your application, a placement coordinator will be in contact with you as soon as possible. Please check out our website, .ruffstartrescue for more details and additional pictures on any of our animals! All Ruff Start dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, up to date on age appropriate vaccines, microchipped, dewormed, and on monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention (dogs) as well as heartworm tested (dogs). Ruff Start Rescue is a foster based rescue. Animals are located in homes throughout Minnesota. We do not have a facility where animals are kept. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
