is willing to deal with me Sure, my name is Honey but that is because they did not know me before they named me. They picked it by looking at my picture LOL. I am really Karen and my motto is NO SHENANIGANS!!! (No offense to the nice Karen's out there, we love you. But THIS Karen is why the stereotype exists). She will ABSOLUTELY make regular reports to the manager and she has no chill. "Karen" is an ~ 8 yr old, 8 lb Chihuahua and Terrier Mix. She is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, free of parasites and has normal labwork. She came to us with an old injury (healed fracture) to her jaw but it does not cause her any issues nor require any further treatment. She prefers wet or softened food but she's likely mixed with chihuahua and that is how they roll anyway Her IDEAL home is someone who just has a quiet and chill life. They do not need to bring their dog with them everywhere they go. They might patter around a garden, read on the porch and sit in a chair a lot to snuggle. Or they are fine with their dog being at home while they putter around life. Homebound? Totally fine. She is great with hermit-ing. Lonely senior? They can gab away on the state of the millenials and the Gen Z's... she is a perfect gossip gal Karen (Honey) needs an adult only home. She has no patience for shenanigans and although she has never been mean to a child, we just don't think she is the right dog for a family with children under the age of 10. If children visit the home regularly then Karen's "service human" might want a quiet calm place for her to retreat to so she can avoid their shenanigans if she feels like it. Karen will go on walks, but she likes to SASS each and every dog she passes and it is annoying and exhausting. She pulls, barks and screams to tell them off in a dog-way of saying GET OFF MY LAWN. She would prefer to totter around a backyard and not have to deal with those shenanigans either. She would be a great dog for someone who is unwilling or unable to go on walks or who lives in the depths of Siberia where there is no potential for anyone to have to deal with her antics while on a stroll. We have never had her around cats, but unless the cats in the household are ones that TAKE NO S**T then she would probably be bringing too much of her milkshake to their yard and they would start pooping on your pillow to show their disdain of her attitude LOL She is friendly to humans but is the type of dog who would be just fine with 1-2 people in her life and no responsibility to host the neighborhood barbeques or be a part of the welcome wagon. No Chamber of Commerce meetings for her, she is way more of a hog-the-mike-at-a-city-council-meeting to complain about various shenanigans Karen (Honey) has no adoption fee and could be transported to most major US airports for flexible people willing to meet our volunteer escorts on standby flights (also at no charge and sponsored by he Troy family) She has a bottle of prescription anti-inflammatory that she can be given as needed for arthritis but we have used it 3 times in 5 months and expect it to last a year or more. We have made her out to be a (little) worse than she is in the hopes that we find the right home for her. She really wants to go #homefortheholidays Please spread her around and send any interested parties to our email or beourpetgmail If there are barriers to adoption for the perfect home such as pet deposits or other, please email us anyway -- we suspect we may be able to work around them GENERAL INFO: Housebroken?: Working on it. She is at a foster home with other dogs and has to be rotated and a lot of time she chooses to use potty pads Crate Trained?: Yes Leash Trained?: Yes Rides Well in Car?: Yes Non-Shedding?: No, but very low shed Good with cats?: Probably not unless they will put her inn her place Good with dogs?: She would prefer to be an only dog Qualifies for Seniors for Seniors?: yes -- adoption fee waived Umbrella of Hope does not have any strict rules on ages of children because all children are different, but our best approximation is that this animal would do best with children over the age of 10-12 Umbrella of Hope is an all-volunteer, donation-run, non-profit animal rescue based out of Pittsburg, CA that rescues animals from local shelters, places them in private foster homes, provides them with needed medical care and then finds them new homes. Also, ask us about our seniors for seniors program, where we adopt animals 5 years or older to qualified homes with a $5 donation as an adoption fee. All animals are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, treated for parasites and given any additional treatments (dental work, bloodwork etc) as recommended by our vet. Adoptions to veterans of the US Armed Services are ALWAYS free to thank you for your service. We thank Well Pet Vet Clinic for providing most of our veterinary services and give a special thanks to volunteer photographers Tanya, Barbara, Kristy, Christine, Teressa and Natalie. We are on all social media at umbrellaofhope and we invite you to follow us and share which helps more people see and adopt our pets. To help our ALL VOLUNTEER team rescue more senior, special needs, medically needy and hospice animals (and a few "typical" ones along the way, please consider making a tax-deductible (TAX ID 45-4103375) donation online at .paypal.me/UOH or Venmo umbrellaof-hoperescue or Zelle beourpetgmail. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
