here because she became nippy with the 18 month old child and it seems she doesn't really care for the mailman. Now for the good stuff: Mia is great with other dogs, house trained, loves car rides and will hang with you outside while you do your chores. She is a very cuddly and thinks she is a lap dog. She loves to play fetch and chase Frisbee. She can't be crated and also doesn't need one. She's not a swimmer. Coming to JR was a bit of a culture shock for this girl and it did take her a couple days to feel comfortable, but she's been really good with all of us and the other dogs - large and small. We promised the owners that we would find a perfect home for her and we know you are out there. So, glad we were able to help this girl. As for health, pretty healthy girl, there is a 2.6 cm diameter dorsal left lumbar area lump that the vet diagnosed as a sebacous cyst. Recently she was said given a dental grade 2 so it seems in the not so distant future she will need a dental. Update: We thought we found the perfect home as the devoted only pet of a mature man. However, he returned her as he enjoyed walking a lot and Mia would aggress other dogs and strange humans when on leash. Leash aggression? Well, maybe, but then when she returned we walked her on leash through the play area with a couple loose dogs and she was fine, but maybe that was due to her being uneasy with all the changes that day of return. He also stated she was not good with strangers coming into the home. She has been fine with everyone coming in and out of the rescue, but maybe it is due to all the other dogs so she doesn't feel the need to protect her home/family and feels the other dogs will do so. In a normal home she may well need to be put in another room/area when strangers (to her) are visiting. Joyful Rescues is not big on drugging dogs to help them fit into someone's lifestyle, but Mia came with Prozac and we were weaning her off when adopted and she was put back on the drug. Maybe in the right home she can't be weaned off safely or maybe there is a need for the medicine to be lifelong. We realize there are a lot of unknowns here and sure hope we find someone willing to work with this sweet, beauty, to give her a calm, secure, home life. The Adoption Fee for this dog is $150.00. Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. In general our fees include spay/neuter, all age appropriate vaccines, Home Again micro-chipping & registration, worming & flea control - a "complete" pet. We accept CASH or Visa/Mastercard ONLY. Joyful Rescues has no funding except for our adoption fees and miscellaneous donations. Pet care and vet bills are expensive - you must be ready to take on this financial (as well as emotional) responsibility. YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 25 YEARS OF AGE TO ADOPT A DOG FROM JOYFUL RESCUES We keep our pet list as up-to-date as possible. As soon as a pet is adopted, it is removed from the list. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
