Gun Dog Group Dog Breeds: Skilled Retrievers, Flushers, and Waterfowl Specialists
The UKC Gun Dog Group features dog breeds developed to assist hunters in locating, flushing, and retrieving game—especially birds and waterfowl. These dogs are known for their keen senses, trainability, and strong work ethic in the field. Whether it’s a Labrador Retriever diving into icy water or a Spaniel flushing birds from dense cover, Gun Dogs combine athleticism with a cooperative spirit. Most breeds in this group are eager to please, highly responsive to commands, and thrive on outdoor activity. Popular Gun Dog breeds include the Golden Retriever, English Springer Spaniel, and German Shorthaired Pointer. Their versatility and friendly nature also make them excellent family companions.

Hertha Pointer
Weight (lbs): | 45-60 |
Height (in): | 2325 |
Colors: | Yellow-orange; with small white markings on feet, tail tip, chest and muzzle |
Overview:
Hertha was bred to "Sport", who was a Pointer from the Duke's breeding, and the results of this pairing were the wellspring of the Hertha Pointer breed. For many years, hunters fostered the "Hertha dog" or "Hertha hound." Soon a breed club was formed, predating the Danish Kennel Club by 54 years (they changed the name to Hertha Pointer, which may have been an unforeseen mistake), and these dogs became common throughout Denmark. A standard has been in effect since 1897, and photos and description were included in the 1902 edition of Henri de Bylandt's book Les Races de Chien.

Overview:
There are two basic types of English Setter ' bench setters which are bred for show rings, and field setters which are bred for hunting and field trial activities. Llewellin Setters are a particular strain of field setter which can trace undiluted ancestry back to the late 1800's kennel of an English nobleman named Richard Purcell Llewellin (1840-1925). Prior to that time in England, english setters were not a well standardized breed. They had for centuries been bred up from spaniel stock and could have best been described at that time as a loose collection of similar types of dogs. The first serious recorded effort to standardize a hunting english setter was undertaken in the mid-1800's by Edward Laverack (1800-1877). He had only mixed success in developing a quality hunting dog, but did succeed in developing a distinct line of dogs which are considered the progenitors of modern bench English Setters.

Petit Griffon de Gascogne

Height (in): | 17-21 |
Colors: | Slate blue, with black and tan. |
Overview:
By crossing the Petit Bleu de Gascogne with bearded hounds, such as the Wirehaired Pointer, French hunters created the Petit Griffon de Gascogne in the 18th century as a rugged and hard working gundog for a variety of game, capable of whitstanding even the harshest of climates. Apart from coat type, this breed is physically very similar to its shorthaired cousins, but is reportedly much more aggressive and driven than other Gascony hounds.
