Scenthound Group Dog Breeds: Powerful Noses, Steady Temperament, and Trail-Tracking Instincts
The UKC Scenthound Group includes dog breeds developed to track game by scent, often over long distances and challenging terrain. These dogs are known for their extraordinary olfactory abilities, endurance, and methodical hunting style. Whether it’s a Bloodhound following a cold trail or a Treeing Walker Coonhound working in dense woods, Scenthounds are built for persistence and precision. Most breeds in this group have deep voices, strong prey drives, and a calm, focused demeanor. While they may be independent thinkers, they’re also loyal companions who thrive with consistent training and outdoor activity. Popular Scenthound breeds include the Bluetick Coonhound, Redbone Coonhound, and American Foxhound.

East Russian Coursing Hound

Height (in): | 22-28 |
Colors: | Tan, gray or black/tan; usually as spots with white |
Overview:
Among the lesser known and oldest of the Russian sighthounds are the Tasy and Taigan. The Tasy hails from the endless desert plains east of the Caspian Sea, where he is also an endurance dog. The ringed tail, tapering head and coat with heavy ear fringes'as well as his home area bordering on northern Iran and Afghanistan' may hint at his historical bonds. The fact that the Afghan Hound (who in his native working state had less hair) is sometimes called Tazi is even more intriguing. Rural hunters have used the Tasy for coursing hare, marmot, fox, hooved game and even wolf. This dog is nimble and can even go into thicket and forest in pursuit. It has a capable nose as well and can search for game by scent before it sees the quarry and begins the chase.

Colors: | Black marked on a white base but covered entirely with black mottling which gives a blue appearance. Two black marks are found on head, covering each ear, enveloping eyes and stopping at cheeks. Blaze also mottled, but a small black mark is often found on skull, a characteristic of the breed. Above each eye a spot of tan gives breed 'four-eyed' effect. Tan marks also found on cheeks, lips, inside ears, on legs and under tail. Some hounds completely mottled, but always have required tan marks. |
Overview:
One of the larger French hunting hounds with aristocratic long head, characteristic head markings and distinctive colour.
