Description
Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed (medium coat). Senior hound Alexander settled into his foster home quite easily, enjoying extra meals and extra rations daily so that he is now pumped and plumped up and has managed to make his mark in the world by becoming even more laid-back and happy. Alexander is probably about 10 years old, and we think he’s had a pretty fulfilling life, although it most likely was not been an easy one. Hunting dogs enjoy their freedom, but unfortunately not all get the care that they need to live long lives without health issues. Alexander is being treated with the "slow-kill method" of heartworm treatment after he was diagnosed last year with that, plus two tick-borne diseases. He has gained about 8 pounds since arriving at his foster home. Alexander enjoys being with a pack of other dogs, including females and males, hounds and a beagle included. His foster mom says he is happy and appreciative of everything she gives him. We are looking forward to helping him continue his journey to good health! Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
