Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed (short coat). Vixen spent her formative years at the shelter, but is now in a foster home, and is proving herself to be a lovely houseguest. She defers to the other ladies of the household who really show their bossiness over her, and she rolls with the slight corrections they give occasionally. She is extremely happy to have a large yard, and access to a doggy door where she can come and go as she pleases, and not at the whim of a volunteer dog walker. She is housetrained, and also crates easily (could that be her hound "dog box" background?) She does not chase the cats in the household, which is truly amazing! We don't have any small children to expose her to, but feel she would adore them, but may be a little enthusiastic initially. Check her out! She is not at the shelter, so we will need an application to send to her foster family to establish a visit time. All adoptions begin with an application, found under the "Animals" tab on our website, friendsofcampbellcounty. *Unaltered babies under the age of six months can be adopted only to residents of Campbell County, the City of Lynchburg, and counties touching Campbell County. *Unaltered adult pets six months or older will need to be sterilized before they can be adopted outside our local area of Campbell County, the City of Lynchburg, or counties touching Campbell. *We do not promote dog adoptions to homes where an invisible fence is the fencing of choice. *We do not permit cats or kittens to be declawed following adoption.

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
