verifiedPosted Breed: Maremma Sheepdog. Sawyer is a big, wonderful boy who was originally rescued from a home where there were a few too many animals. He is a Maremma Sheepdog, also known as an Italian Sheepdog and is about 7-8 yrs. old. While Sawyer enjoys being outside and going on long walks, he was raised in a home as a companion animal and likes to be close to his family. He bonds well with his people and LOVES being petted and will quietly seek out attention (he will even bring you slippers!). Sawyer can be a bit shy and fearful in new situations so patience is needed. Sawyer is house trained, and he has lived with other dogs and cats his entire life. He enjoys playing with other dogs, and 90 percent of the time Sawyer is content to coexist with other animals. However he has some resource guarding issues towards other animals (meaning that he is very possessive over things he values, like toys and treats), so he would do best as an only pet in the home or with a family who is dog and cat savvy and is willing to manage his behaviors. Sawyer is looking for a quiet, adult, home where he can spend his golden years with someone who will give him all the time, love and patience he deserves to be happy - he is truly a wonderful, sweet dog. Please e-mail us or contact 715-468-7784 to find out more about this very special dog.

verifiedPosted Breed: Maremma Sheepdog (long coat). Adoption Fee: $325+tax. Name: Little Bear Age: 2 years Gender: Male Breed: Maremma Sheepdog Weight: 100 pounds Dog friendly: Yes Cat friendly: Yes Child friendly: Yes House trained: Yes Crate trained: Yes Energy level: Moderate/low Temperament: devoted, intelligent, watchful, affectionate Adoption Fee: $325+tax To adopt, go to: http://www.mendingspirits.org/dog-application.html From the Foster Family: Little Bear is a very special dog who has many unique qualities that compose him as such. First, it is important and required to fully understand the breed. The Maremma Sheepdog is a flock and herd guardian. Their characteristics abroad both with temperament and physical composure are as such that beautifully equip them to be this type of incredible working class dog. Little Bear is a very big dog with a heavy dense dual layer coat. Maremma Sheepdogs are heavy shedders and will blow their coat two times per year. It is important and required to keep the coat brushed regularly. The breed is heat sensitive and this must be kept into consideration at all times for their safety. Little Bear is on a high quality salmon and potato based dog food. This type of food is required to avoid and alleviate inflamed itchy ears that he experiences while consuming other types of food of which he eats 4-5 cups daily. He enjoys treats from time to time, squash and pumpkin are his favorite and once in a while he enjoys chewing an antler, hoof or bully stick. Little Bear's activity level is low to moderate. He requires the opportunity to participate in mental and physical stimulation to maintain well-being. This involves walks, affection/interaction from humans, play activities and enrichment that involve the senses. He loves going for car rides, going to pet stores, strolls around the neighborhood, playing in the back yard, fetch, exploring, patrolling and watching over the yard. His ultimate favorite is spending time with his loved ones and keeping watch over his family circle. He adores children and meeting other people. He is gentle dog and walks beautifully on a leash. It is required that Little Bear never allowed to roam off leash at any time except when in a fully fenced secure space. A large fully fenced yard is an adoption requirement for him with no exceptions and the fence must be sturdy and secure. Little Bear is very intelligent and knows how to open fence gates, so locking them is important. He will look for weak spots within a fence to push under and will. He can push up and under chainlink fence if it is not 100%secured at the bottom. This need to meander and wander is typical to the breed, he will patrol his perimeter and will wander away if left off leash in an unenclosed fully secured space. He is an intelligent dog who's goal is to not just love but to also watch over his family. This means that if a stranger (animal or human) visits he will be weary and watchful in the beginning. He will alert with a deep bark and quickly with his handler's reassurance will welcome others once he knows everything is okay. He adores children and will protect them with his life. Boisterous play amongst adults and children will trigger Little Bear to protect those kids and he will rush over to investigate immediately. Overall, Little Bear is truly a one of a kind soul who deserves a well suited experienced home to ensure his lifelong wellbeing. It is required that those interested have a large fully fenced yard, breed awareness and experience with livestock guardian dogs, plus be fully aware of the necessary items that successfully promote lifelong ownership of such a majestic and noble dog.
