* If you are interested in a dog, please first read the biography on the dog (keep scrolling down for the bio!) and then go to our website, .dpsrescue for an application. Our adoption fee is $400-$600. if a biography does not otherwise say then it is $400. We will also post at the end of the evening the names of those dogs who have been adopted: .facebook/DPSRescue This dog will be at Palo Alto Pet Food Express on Saturday, May 11th from 12pm-4pm and Sunday, May 12th from 11-3pm or until adopted. However, we do meet with those who submit an application and are approved just prior to the event (by invitation only) and they are given the first opportunity to adopt. If you are interested in one of our dogs, we recommend filling out an application prior to the event to be considered. Applications submitted within 24 hours of the event may not necessarily be reviewed. Alfalfa is a 4 year old Shih Tzu-Affenpinscher mix. He weighs 11lbs. He was an owner surrender to our rescue when his home moved and didn't take him with them. We agreed to take him in when a neighborhood dog lover contacted us and asked if we could take him so he didn't have to go to the shelter. He is such a lover boy. He gets along well with everyone. He came into his foster mom and within minutes was snuggled up on the couch with his foster mom. They are best buds. He goes to work with her and sits under her desk. He follows her around the house and it's obvious he is in love. We know if he is like this with her, he will be like this with his next Mom or Dad. Alfalfa gets along well with other dogs. He has dogs in his foster home. He gets along great with the young, the old, the nice ones and the grumpy old man dog. He is a dog who makes friends where ever he goes. This means he's an option for the dog park, doggy day camp or to go out and about in the neighborhood meeting new friends. He's an option to go to Starbucks or Peet's with Mom when she gets her coffee on Saturday and wants to sit down and chat with friends on the outside patio. Alfalfa is an option to go to an experienced or a novice home as long as they are can demonstrate their preparedness for having a dog. If there are children they need to be over the age of 6.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
