petfinder.com or www.RoadtoRescueLA.org) INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLY: PLEASE read profile thoroughly BEFORE applying: DOG APPLICATION LINK: http://www.roadtorescuela.org/dog-application Lula (female) Intake date: 9/14/2017 Affenpinscher Approx 2-3 years old 11.4 pounds Adoption fee: $170, which includes microchip and enrollment fee Good with other dogs: yes Cats: yes Vetting: altered (spayed/neutered), UTD on shots, heartworm negative, fecal negative, Capstar and flea preventive, x-ray performed (see health issues below) Health issues: Lula’s former owner expressed to us that Lula “attacks herself” but she had not been to a vet to assess the reason. We observed her and witnessed that she starts to growl and look towards her back end. Then she’ll bite at her back legs. Our vet took an xray and sent the xray off to be read by a specialist. It was determined that they could not rule out that she might have disc issues (back issues). This is not really a clear diagnosis, but we have found daily Vetprofen has decreased her episodes significantly. Her adopter needs to be willing and financially able to keep her on her medication and continue vet visits as needed or if it becomes worse over time. Temperament: Very sweet and social; lovable Energy level: medium; despite her condition, she runs and plays normally / she can also be a sweet little lap dog Groom needs: high; Lula will need grooming every few weeks and regular brushing in between grooms. She struggles somewhat with grooming and baths due to her issue; so patience is needed Biography: Lula came to us as an owner-surrender. It's a long story, but in short she was surrendered due to the owner's health and because of financial reasons. The owner had three dogs... one of which was her first dog. Lula and another dog came in after-the-fact after the owner rescued them from different situations. We were told that she rescued after her previous owner threatened to shoot her because “the dog is crazy”. What is so sad is that she actually has a condition causing her reactions and no one took her to a vet to find out what was going on. She is feeling much better now that she has daily anti-inflammatory / pain medication. She’s a cool little dog and has won the hearts of everyone at the rescue... dogs and people alike. We want a home for her where she will be number one; where she will be a priority and where she will be cared for and receive medical attention when needed. If you feel that is you, we welcome your application. **IMPORTANT NOTES** *All of our adoptable dogs are small, and they are never to be left outside alone, ever! We only rehome our dogs to adopters that plan to have them as inside dogs and part of the family! We do allow adopters with doggie doors, provided there is SECURE fencing. There is no exception to this rule! *NO SMALL CHILDREN!! As with almost all the dogs at NR2R, young children or a very active household is not recommended. Many of our dogs come to us BECAUSE of small children, thus we do not rehome our dogs to homes with babies or young children. KEEP THIS IN MIND IF YOU HAVE VISITING GRANDCHILDREN AS WELL! Even if the children are older, it would depend on the child AND the parent or parents. *HOUSETRAINING: We do NOT guarantee that any of our adoptable dogs are housetrained. While most should be easily trained, keep in mind that they live in a rescue where they have access to the outdoors all day and are inside at night. Even if they were surrendered to us as housetrained, it doesn’t mean they will automatically be housetrained in your home. Housetraining them should be easy in the right home with time, patience, and consistency. *We do not guarantee the age, health or temperament of any of the dogs we rehome. Many of the dogs we take in come from animal control and rarely do we have histories and even when we do, many times the histories are inaccurate. *Only adopters with a responsible dog ownership history and excellent vet reference need apply. If you bring this pet into your heart and home, you will receive in return many years of love, companionship, and loyalty. That’s our guarantee. Other notes: This pet is available for adoption through Ninna’s Road to Rescue, Benton, La. We are 501c3 non-profit organization. Our mission is to rescue small-breed dogs and a handful of cats and to re-home them into RESPONSIBLE and CARING forever homes. DOG APPLICATION LINK: http://www.roadtorescuela.org/dog-application Time may be of the essence if you are looking to adopt a specific animal. We do not reserve animals, unless and until we have approved your application, provided the animal is still available at the time we receive your application. The first APPROVED application we receive will be considered. We are NOT a first come, first serve rescue!! We adopt our rescues out to the RIGHT home, not just A home. Only responsible pet owners need apply. Applying to adopt does NOT commit you to the adoption until you’ve met the pet (unless you already have and know you want to adopt the pet). Our adoptable pets are updated regularly, but if you want to check the availability of a pet... OR still have questions AFTER reading this profile, EMAIL: roadtorescue@bellsouth.net. Please indicate the name of the pet in the subject of the email. www.RoadtoRescueLA.org

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
