sitive from being outdoors and terrified of the world around him. He came into the rescue completely shut down and would not come out of his crate to engage with people or other dogs. We knew this was going to be a longer term commitment, but are lucky to have committed fosters who give dogs like Max a chance at a better life. Max spent a few months with one of our rural fosters, which gave him time and space to decompress and begin to trust people, and complete his heartworm treatment. When he was ready, he was moved to his new foster home, and is currently living with 2 teen girls, 4 other dogs, and 2 cats, and every day he’s gaining confidence. He’s still afraid of new and sudden noises, and will need time to adjust to change, but he’s made huge strides. He has become comfortable and familiar with the sounds of home and people coming and going, and has started to engage his foster family for affection and petting. He craves the closeness with humans that he’s been missing, and has started following his foster mom around the house, nudging people to rub his belly when he gets the opportunity. As Max has progressed in rehabilitation, he’s started to show signs of relaxing and even joy at times. He will run around the kitchen and chase toys, and will join the other dogs in the family room when it’s treat time. He also likes to run in the back yard, but if he hears a noise or feels uncertain, will run back to the door to come inside. Max is crate and house trained, and his fosters allow him free roam of their home because he has never had an accident or been destructive. Max has made tremendous progress in the past 2 months and bonded quickly with his foster mom. We are looking for a committed foster or adopter to step up for Max. He needs a family who has the patience to give him time to trust and warm up on his terms, but the rewards of loving a dog like this are immeasurable. He has never shown an ounce of aggression to people or other dogs, and has a very submissive nature. He needs a calm home, and another dog in the family to help build his confidence would be ideal, along with a fenced yard. He will walk on a leash, but stays very close to you because he is still fearful of walking on his own. Like everything with Max, he will need time to get used to the sights and sounds of a new area before he’s ready for full leash walks, but he will get there. Even after all he’s been through, Max is a very sweet boy who doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. He will be great for someone who wants an indoor companion and is willing to invest some time to help him reach his full potential. Once he’s into a routine and begins to trust, he will bloom into your most lovable friend. Max loves human attention, he just needs to find that special person who is willing to invest in him. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
