ily. She’s an affectionate dog who loves people and has good house manners – housetrained, crate trained, and knows basic commands like sit, wait/place, and release. Her former home had two toddlers in the mix, and as a young, sometimes jumpy dog, that was not the best fit for her. She’s great with kids, but is better suited for kids 8+ years old. Casey’s foster dad, James, describes her as a happy, confident, good-natured dog who loves to snuggle, and really enjoys people. She’s also super cute with soft eyes and a big bully smile that always attracts attention. He recently walked her to Whole Foods, and while he was waiting outside, 3 or 4 people came up to meet her. She loved the attention and is great meeting new people. James has been taking Casey everywhere with him - on errands, to his mom’s house to hang out with his 9- and 11-year-old nieces, and over to his girlfriend’s house. She still has some adolescent excitement and energy in new situations, so she needs an owner who can implement boundaries, and tell her No when appropriate. She’s so eager to please, learns quickly, and takes correction well. We’ve discovered that Casey really enjoys other dogs, and she’s currently fostered with two other playful pups of a similar size and personality. She likes to wrestle and romp around the yard as part of a pack, and is more of a rough-and-tumble player. She would love to have a pup buddy in her new home, and will pair best with another active, confident dog. She would be fine as an only dog too, but as an active, athletic dog, she needs a family who is committed to her daily exercise and playtime, especially in the absence of pup playmate. She will make a great running partner and knows how to run by your side. Casey’s leash skills are pretty good, and she walks best with a training collar. She gets excited and will try to pull when she sees a squirrel, but she’s NOT reactive to people or other dogs and is unfazed by the sights and sounds of more urban life. She could be a city dog, as long as she has an active family and an area to romp and play daily. Casey is a family dog who wants to be part of something. She’s silly and fun, and still has a lot of young pup in her. She needs someone who can give her lots of love and attention, while teaching her appropriate boundaries at home - when it’s okay to jump on couches and beds, when to go to her place, how to greet people calmly, etc. She’s an awesome dog who is going to make some lucky family a wonderful companion. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
