ION PENDING. As of January 2017, Bentley is now heartworm free!! Meet Bentley, a very friendly and outgoing 3 year-old Hound mix male with a sweet face and a fantastic disposition. Bentley found himself homeless at a rural county dog shelter which is tough enough but he also tested positive for heartworms there making it almost impossible for him to get a second chance. Fortunately, the shelter volunteers contacted us for help with him so he made the trip to Canine Lifeline so he would be able to get the lifesaving treatment that he needed and make a fresh start with a new family. Bentley was treated for heartworms in mid-July and will be ready for adoption on Friday August 19, at the end of his 30 days of cage-rest post-heartworm treatment. We just can’t say enough good things about this dog! He has been a perfect gentleman in his foster home—excellent crate manners and possibly housetrained too although we can’t guarantee it. He gets along very well with other dogs of all sizes. Bentley loves attention from his human friends and has been quite well-mannered when meeting new people. He will probably need a little more work on the leash but it won’t be long before he’s walking like a pro. He gets a little excited meeting kitties so a cat-free home might be best for him. Please check out his video at the link below. Bentley weighs about 60 pounds and his adoption fee is $200. He’s neutered, current on monthly heartworm preventative, up to date on vaccinations, wormed, on flea preventative, and microchipped. All Canine Lifeline adoptions come with a two-week trial period to make sure it’s a great match before the adoption is finalized. Please email info@caninelifeline.org if you’re interested in Bentley. An approved application is required before we set up meets with any of our dogs. All of our dogs come to us from county dog pounds so we have no history on them. We also have no foster homes with young children so aren’t comfortable placing any of them in a home with children less than 4-5 years of age. We try to respond to inquiries within 24-48 hours so if you haven’t heard from us within that time frame, please check your junkmail or spam folder to make sure our reply hasn’t landed in there. Bentley’s heartworm treatment cost about $450. If you’d like to make a donation to help with his care so that we can save another dog in the future, please do so on our website at www.caninelifeline.org or by sending a check to Canine Lifeline, PO Box 25742, Garfield Hts OH 44125. Thank you from Bentley and Canine Lifeline! https://youtu.be/k0GkCRC_SPM Please visit http://www.caninelifeline.org/2015/adoption-process/ for more information about our adoption process and to submit an online application.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
