rom Fresno but have been living here at Family Dog Rescue for a handful of months now, patiently waiting for someone to give me a chance. When I first arrived to the shelter I was SO frightened, I didn’t know who to trust or that humans could be so nice. But with some time, I’ve come to realize humans can be awesome!! I have a few humans whom I LOVE and feel so comfortable with. I’ll even run up to them wagging my tail and roll over for some belly rubs. My favorite humans keep telling me that there are tons of other humans who want to love me too, but I’m still getting used to that idea. I want to give love and be loved, but I need practice and patience. Once I love a human, I only have eyes for them!! Lately I’ve been really brave and have been pushing myself to let other humans into my circle. I even go for walks through the neighborhood now!! I’m so proud of myself. Before I came to Family Dog, no one really gave me a chance to be socialized, so all of this is new for me. My humans tell me I’m doing great. A few of my favorite things include, belly rubs, making pig-snorting noises when I’m excited, snuggling with my office mate (I’m lucky to share an office with one of my favorite humans!) sleeping on soft blankets, chicken jerky, stuffed kongs, and classical music. I like other dogs for the most part, I’ve lived with a few. If you choose to come meet me at the shelter, please understand I’ll need some time to warm up and to trust you. But I promise if you give me that chance, I will give you unconditional love. I’d love to go home with someone who has some shy dog experience and will be understanding of me. I would also really benefit from a patient and loving foster home that will help me continue to blossom. Sometimes being at the shelter can be loud and stressful, so I’d love to see what it’s like to live in a real home. Here’s what my office mate has to say about me: “Noodle has been living in my office with me for the past couple of months since she arrived. At first, no one could get very close to her. It was almost as if she hadn’t ever had the chance to receive love from a human. But very quickly she warmed up to me, and within a couple of days she was wagging her tail and always excited to see me. A couple more weeks went by and now she had a fan club, everyone thinks she is so cute here. She has five or six people whom she feels really comfortable with now. She loves getting snuggled and pet, and even is getting more confident going for walks. I see so much potential in this dog and know she would make a wonderful companion. It would be incredibly rewarding to watch this dog grow and blossom into a confident and happy pooch. All it will take is love and patience. I know her person is out there!” http://www.wearefamilydog.com/2017/noodle/

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
