Foster Home Feedback 2/17/2024 Foster Feedback: Daniels is such a chill, laid back dude! He is low energy and just prefers to hang out on the couch or in bed with his people. While I'm gone at work, he stays in the kennel and does well. For the first few days, he barked for about 10 mins when he first went in. Recently, he's been quiet the whole time. He is cautious of strangers at first - especially men - but with treats and time, he warms up very quickly. He does not appreciate his ears or feet being touched at first, but as I gain his trust, he's been letting me touch them. Cats are not a problem for this guy! He ignores my cat and they just coexist peacefully. He's also very good with dogs, but prefers ones who are low energy and won't get in his face. He gets along wonderfully with my 7-year-old dog and they even cuddle from time to time. My 4-month-old puppy is a bit more annoying, but he tolerates her. On occasion, he will get an urge to play and they have a great time! He feels as though food and treats are his and his alone, so everyone gets fed separately in my house. He does get upset with the other dogs when he feels threatened that they may take something of his. The good news is that he is not interested in toys, so I'm able to have chew toys out for the puppy without an issue. We are working on basic manners and he is a PERFECT listener. He always comes when he's called and he knows sit and lay down. We are working on loose leash walking and clicker training and he's doing great. He's very food motivated and responds extremely well to the clicker training. Since he goes by the name Tor from his previous home, that's what I've been calling him, but he is very smart and would pick up on almost anything. He has lived with kids in the past and did well. He prefers a more chill setting - he would be perfectly happy with older kids or younger kids who know how to behave around dogs. The ideal home for him would be a calm environment with not a lot of chaos or excitement. He's most happy when we're just hanging out. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
