ns. Their teen son adopted her initially, but lost interest and the parents were not committed to her. She was clearly bred a few times and we suspect left alone a lot or kept isolated, and did not have the life she deserves. It's sad for any dog to lose their home, but it's also an opportunity for Mocha to have a much better life where she is loved and truly a member of the family. Mocha is such an affectionate, loving dog...pure sweetness. She's fun, playful, smart, and when given a command, she listens and wants to please you. She has lived with cats, and was fostered with another dog in SC. She's excellent at meeting dogs outside on leash, and will not react even when they bark in her face. Inside the home, she's a little more selective about her doggy pals, and would need a gradual introduction to the right dog. She has a pretty submissive nature, but is more interested in the love and affection of her people than a dog buddy. This amazing girl needs a stable, loving home, and a consistent routine, and she will flourish. Initially, she can be a little anxious because she's had a lot of change over the past two months. Once she settles in, a playful, fun dog emerges who connects quickly to her person. She's housetrained, crate trained (with some intial whining), has learned "sit" and is working on her leash walking skills. She loves to sniff and explore on walks, and will sometimes get excited and want to chase a squirre For Mocha it's all about trusting her environment and giving her some time to adjust. With the right family, this sweet girl is going to make an excellent family dog or sidekick for road trips, hikes, or just hanging out. Mocha loves to chew and play with her toys, and is always up for a game of fetch, but she also knows how to chill and snuggle when she's inside. She's met her foster mom's grandson who is 6 yo a few times and did great with him, and is very gentle with kids. While she's still can be timid to some men at first meeting, she warms up quickly once she trusts her environment. We think Mocha would do best in an active home who will give her lots of love and attention, play with her, and work on her basic training. She would do well with a confident leader to show her the ropes. She is very devoted to her person and really wants to please. She is treat motivated, very trainable, and takes correction well. If you want a lovable, fun companion, who is very smart and learns quickly, Mocha may just be your girl. Apply today! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
