Boo, Bet Boo, Betboozie, Boozie and lil piggy(she snorts). I saw her face and description posted at a pound. They said she had a wobbly walk and and patchy, irritated skin. As soon as I took the leash and walked out, I knew her cruciate was torn. I knew this would be a long-term case. We got in the car and the whole ride she whined and cried out while rubbing her skin against the back seat. We went right to the tub for a medicated bath. She was so good for it and you could see the relief and appreciation with her big smile-it’s infectious! You can’t help but smile when she looks at you. She had some mammary lumps, needed spayed and a consult for her leg. It was decided to remove the masses first and send to the lab. The specialist said if the masses return quickly then the leg surgery wasn’t an option. They didn’t come back!!! Betty was scheduled for a TPLO. I was filled with total excitement for this girl! It took some time for that special day but having such a caring, compassionate and impeccable surgeon was worth the wait. Betty(and I) had a challenging few weeks. She did great after surgery but 44# of dead weight having to be carried upstairs, put on/off the bed/furniture for several weeks was a tough job but she’s worth it! Luckily her skin was great during that time. It was a struggle to figure out what the issue was at first. She had red, irritated and very itchy skin. She was on multiple rounds of several medications, medicated baths several times a week and I started eliminating certain proteins to figure it out. I noticed her skin was amazing during recovery and realized I was carrying her out and bringing her right back in. She couldn’t roam around the yard and be a sneak and munch on weeds! She started on Apoquel and it cleared her right up! She does get a loud “Betty!” when I see her creeping thru the landscape. I rescued Betty at the end of January 2022. Her skin was great during the frigid months after it was balanced/cleared up. I’m unsure if she will need to be on Apoquel all year or just the spring until winter hits. She is on daily CBD oil(surgeon recommended) and will need to stay on this. It made a noticeable difference in just 3 days. It costs approximately $30/mo. She is completely housebroken, is on the lower side of the energy scale, loves butt scratches(watch you hand/fingers bc she does nibble if you get her going), is friendly with dogs of all sizes(with proper introduction) and is complete lover! Her pure and happy heart brings joy to each day. She snores when in a deep sleep. She snorts like a piggy when she’s acting silly. She adores her 25# foster brother. He looks out for her. She doesn’t do well with dogs with too much energy or that act crazy. She feels a bit intimidated by dogs much larger than her or that are too dominant. I’ve had multiple kittens/cats around her. She does great with them unless they fuss with her too much then she air nips. I would love to see Betty in a home with a smaller more submissive dog that is a bit playful. She deserves to have tons of love and attention especially being around 9yrs old. She does get playful with her foster brother and with toys especially squeaky ones. She needs a good walk everyday to keep that new leg moving and rebuilding muscle. We are working on building stamina since she went an unknown amount of time in her condition. She has a scar on her head and her ear seems it was gnarled. She also has a scar on her leg. I don’t know if she was caught in something or not. Whatever happened to her didn’t suppress her beautiful spirit! I’ve attached a video with her pictures. You have to watch it! Her adoption fee is $150 which includes her spay, vaccines, microchip and current monthly prevention for heartworm, flea and ticks and a new leg!!! If you’re interested in meeting this beautiful butterfly, please apply at .tobyscrittercoverescue. All animals are up to date on age appropriate shots, microchipped and fixed. To meet one of our animals we require an approved application. You can fill one out at tobyscrittercoverescue/adoptionapp/

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
