al shelter and he was a matted mess. He looked like a mop with feet..... except that his fur was so long that you couldn't see his feet... Pepe had clearly been very neglected for a long time. That probably explains why he is who he is. Bottom line, Pepe is a grumpy old man. We don't really know how old he is. The vet estimates somewhere between 8-10 years old. Pepe is one of those dogs who has a very strong personality..... like most cairn terriers do. Pepe wants to do things his way. He is older, kind of grumpy, hard of hearing, does not see well and is somewhat arthritic (although that doesn't slow him down). What it does do is make him extremely crabby if anyone pushes or pulls him and he does not appreciate being picked up. Pepe likes attention and he likes to be pet.... when he feels like it. He will come snuggle on the couch when he is in the mood and when he is not, he likes to nap on a soft dog bed in the sun. He loves treats but because he doesn't see well he will catch the end of your finger when he is taking it unless you are fast. Pepe has been adopted and returned several times because when he is pushed, pulled or dragged he will bite. Pepe has learned that being snippy will get people to leave him alone and he uses that to his advantage. Pepe is a crotchety old man. He is very charming when he wants to be and would be a great companion for a person who does not get a lot of company, does not want a lot of exercise and will let him kind of do his own thing..... basically he is a cat. Apply to adopt our crotchety cat - dog today!! Pepe is up to date on age appropriate vaccinations, neutered, and microchipped. His adoption fee is $175. All of our dogs are spayed or neutered, up to date on age appropriate vaccinations, microchipped and if over 6 months of age, heartworm tested and on heartworm preventative in their foster home. We require an approved application to meet any of our dogs. We do not have a shelter location and will not arrange a meeting without an approved application. We strive to make sure the bios provided for our dogs are complete and accurate; we do understand that mistakes happen, however, so if you absolutely cannot find the answer to your question in the dog's bio, you can contact us for more information. We require a home visit for each dog we adopt out, so we adopt within a 2 hour radius of Dayton, OH. If you are outside of this radius, we encourage you to contact your local rescue or shelter.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
