I 02886, 1000 Bald Hill Rd., from 2-4 p.m. But don't wait! Fill out an application at least three days in advance to be pre-screened and gain exclusive entry to the event from 1-2 p.m. My paw and your hand were meant for each other!!! ;@ Age: 4 Months (as of 9/14/17) Weight: 30 lbs (as of 10/1/17) Location: RI This dog has been spayed/neutered, is up to date on shots, on heartworm preventative and is microchipped. Meet Cas from the PAWSOME litter named the "Oil" litter. They appear to be Catahoula mix and born around 5/14/17. They were found only days old, covered in some kind of motor oil in a cardboard box and left in a city park. Some people believe motor oil can treat fleas and mange...neither of which these puppies had! Fortunately, our southern partner swooped in and rescued them. They bathed them, nursed them back to health and have reared them to be happy, healthy pups! We are happy to say they are now ready to find their fur-ever homes! Cas is so handsome, he's mostly black with white on his chest and chin. He is sure to turn heads wherever he goes. He is great with other dogs - though he may be a little growly about sharing his toys - and is playful with cats. He likes running and chasing the other foster dogs. Who said Oil and water don't mix? We guess they didn't see Cas in the pool! He loves to swim and would love to have a pool in his new home! A home with a fenced-in yard would be best, but if not he will need lots of walks and trips to a dog park. After play, he settles down nicely and likes to snuggle up with you. House training is going well - he'll stand by the door and bark to go out. He's okay in a crate, but he'd rather sleep with, or at least, close to his people. Leash training is a work in progress - he doesn't pull, but is easily distracted which makes for a rather zig-zaggy walk! We recommend that all our dogs, especially puppies attend obedience training. All puppies need someone with lots of patience, time, energy and dedication. With training, Cas will make a great companion to take along on hikes, to the beach or any fun activity you can think of. His foster says he's a "great puppy"! He takes correction well from humans and other dogs. He sleeps well in his crate at night. He knows "sit" and is working on "stay" and "wait." He already knows that he has to wait until his foster says it's okay when she puts his food down. He's much more an "act first, ask questions later" kind of guy, and is a little vocal during play time, but otherwise quiet, He loves people, dogs and of course, FOOD! He's been curious of his foster's cat but has not tried to chase him. Cas is waiting to join a loving family. If you would like him to join yours, please fill out an application and get ready for years of fun, happiness and lots of love! Medical Note: This dog was treated for demodectic mange while in the SOS program. The dog has responded well to this treatment. Please note that demodex can flare up in any dog in times of stress (eg, transport, transition to a new home, change in food, etc). As such, the adopter is advised to discuss this condition and best next steps with their veterinarian. SOS recommends that dogs with a history of demodectic mange be kept on regular NexGard or Bravecto for flea/tick prevention for at least 3 months or until 18 months of age. Please see here for more information on demodectic mange: http://www.vcahospitals.com/main/pet-health-information/article/animal-health/mange-demodectic-in-dogs/741 . Please check with your vet if you should have any questions or concerns about this condition, and discuss any concerns you may have with your SOS Adoption Counselor. Adoption Fee: $550 To apply for this dog, fill out an adoption application on our website: www.sosarl.org/aa/ **Additional info you should know - For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label. Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption. There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
