ADOPTION FEE: 350.00 plus HST Please hit SHARE for Girlfriend I have a sad story to tell you. Somebody dumped me at a dead end road isolated in the country. I was there for over a week and the mail lady kept seeing me laying on the bridge at the dead end. She phoned me and let me know. The mail lady thought I was a Pug . But that’s Ok, she was a Good Samaritan who was looking out for me. For 4 days I tried catching her with food and talking to her. I would call her “Girlfriend “, and tell her I wanted to help her. She wasn’t having it. She would show me her teeth and growl. She was very sore, and I could see her back legs were very swollen. She could not move fast at all. My husband and I then tried the catch pole. She certainly wasn’t having any of that either. This poor girl was sleeping through wicked thunderstorms on that damn bridge. I assume she was waiting for her owner to come back. She wouldn’t leave the bridge. We set a live trap and FINALLY after 4 days and nights, we had her! I was skeptical whether or not this dog would be adoptable. After just two days of rest and meticam for pain, she was eating food from my hands. Within 4 or 5 days she was truly my “Girlfriend “. Girlfriend, has come a looooong way. She loves me to bits and I can do anything with her. She also loves my husband. Girlfriend, loves to go for long walks, loves to be scratched and belly rubs. She lets me bath her with ease, clean her ears, brush her and is an all around love bug. Now for the cons......Girlfriend, does not like other dogs. She is a very dominant female. We take her walking (on leash) with a pack of other dogs, but we just make sure the other dogs do not get in her face. The other dogs just know to give her a wide birth. She does not growl or bark at the other dogs while walking, which is nice. This way you can walk her with other dogs and friends......but you have to make sure she is under control on your leash in case another dog comes into “her space”. If another dog comes in her circle of space, she will grab them...... she is silent about it.....she gives no warning. She is kind of like a shark lurking LOL Everyday we walk her in a pack of 5-6 dogs with her on leash, the others off leash, and we have had only one incident where a new dog got too close to her. Silently, she grabbed him and tried to shake him. I was quickly able to get her under control. Girlfriend, is breaking my heart. She is such a lovely dog with people but she must go to a home as an only dog. She will make an amazing companion for someone who wants one dog. She is breaking my heart, because I do not want to have to euthanize her. This is her chance to to find that home. I have not tested her with cats. Because I do not know her history, I will not place her in a home with small children to be on the safe side. Older children would be fine. I think she would love the attention she would get. If you think you can provide a home for “Girlfriend”, please email kismuttsymptico.ca and request an application. If there is a good fit for her, and you are committed to adopting her after meeting her, I will then get her spayed and fully vaccinated before going to her new home.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
