/ for more information about our adoption process and to submit an online application. This good-looking guy is Monroe, a 3 year-old Collie mix male who found himself homeless at a rural county dog shelter along with his brother Magic. We don’t know whether they were strays or owner surrenders but both made the trip to Canine Lifeline so they could take their time finding permanent new homes. We didn’t realize until they arrived here with us that Monroe and Magic do NOT like each other. Needless to say, they will not be adopted to the same home. Monroe can also be particular about his other dog friends but is a bit more mellow meeting other dogs than his brother Magic. Even so, Monroe would likely do best as the only dog in the home so he could enjoy all the attention from his humans. He has had excellent crate manners in his foster home so should be able to pick up the house rules quickly in his new home. Monroe is still trying to figure out the whole leash walking experience. He tends to try to stay as close as possible to the person walking him so has a tendency to get twisted and tangled around their legs. Monroe also likes to flop over for a belly rub frequently so it makes walking him a bit of a challenge at this point. We’re sure he’ll improve in this area as he gains more experience. Monroe is very friendly with people and is sure to blossom and be a much more confident dog under the patient and loving care of his new family. Monroe weighs about 44 pounds and his adoption fee is $250. He’s neutered, heartworm negative and on monthly preventative, up to date on vaccinations including bivalent canine influenza, wormed, on flea and tick preventative, and microchipped. As part of the adoption process, all adopters must commit to a two-week adjustment period to make sure it’s a great match before the adoption is finalized. Please email infocaninelifeline if you’re interested in Monroe. An approved application is required before we schedule meets with any of our dogs. Please note that we don’t place our dogs in homes with children under the age of 7 years. We try to respond to inquiries within 72 hours so if you haven’t heard from us within that time frame, please check your junkmail or spam folder to make sure our reply hasn’t landed in there. Please visit our website at .caninelifeline to see more photos of Monroe and to submit an online application.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
