r Forever Home! Come meet Kanga and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (Sep 17) from 12-2 pm at the PetSmart in Gaithersburg (218 Kentlands Blvd, Gaithersburg, MD 20878)!!!!!! KANGA NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: King Best Guess for Breed: Doxie/Min-Pin mix Best Guess for Age: 9 months (as of 8/23/2017) SEX: female Approximate Weight: 17 lbs Has Lived With: other dogs Currently Living at: DC Foster. Meet sweet Kanga! This 9 month old, sweet southern belle is a doxie/min pin mix and is the perfect 17 lbs ready to come to DC and join your family! Kanga has no idea how she ended up in a scary shelter, but is ready to find her family. She is dreaming of long walks in her new neighborhood, trips to the dog park with her person, being the star pupil at obedience school, and having a warm lap to snuggle up in and binge watch Netflix! Can you see yourself as sweet Kanga's human? Like most shelter dogs, Kanga may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Kanga gets along fabulously with other dogs and kitties too! If you have kiddies, we can find out if she gets along with them when she arrives in DC! Update from Kanga's Foster: "She is a real sweetheart. Very snuggly. Very quiet. A VERY good sport letting our dog play with her and wrestle her. She has been to the dog park twice and likes meeting humans and other dogs, although she seems to prefer snuggling up to playing. Here are a few pics of her relaxing and watching the football games on Sunday. At one point yesterday she disappeared. I went into the dark bedroom to find her, turned on the lights, and she was lounging in the dog bed with her hands covering her eyes. She only had one accident in the house and it was on the bath mat when she first arrived (which is a very polite place to have an accident). Otherwise, she has had no problem going to the bathroom outside. She also seems fully acclimated to her crate." The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
