iniature Pinscher mix Come meet Olivia and other great adoptable dogs at this weekend's events: Saturday (July 15) from 11-3 pm at the Ruff House (12264 Wilkins Avenue Rockville, MD 20852) Sunday (July 16) from 12-2 pm at the PetSmart in Gaithersburg (218 Kentlands Blvd, Gaithersburg, MD 20878) OLIVIA NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Olivia Best Guess for Breed: Dachshund/Miniature Pinscher mix Best Guess for Age: 3 years old SEX: female Approximate Weight: 25 lbs. Has Lived With: other dogs Currently Living in boarding Olivia needs a foster and a forever home. Special Consideration: Olivia must go to a home with a dog. Anyone looking for a cute little bundle of fun? Well then, meet Olivia. This cheerful Dachshund / Miniature Pinscher mix will bring loads of joy to some lucky person or family. How can you resist her soulful brown eyes? Both breeds are known for being lively, energetic, and courageous so don't let Olivia's small size fool you into thinking she's just a lap dog. Doxies love to burrow so having her own sandbox would be heaven on earth for this dog. Your clothes would make a good substitute so be careful where you leave that pile of laundry. It goes without saying that most Doxies think the best place in the world to sleep is under your bed covers. Olivia has short, fine fur so be ready to pick out a sweater when the cooler weather arrives. A jacket for the rain is another good idea as Doxies are known for their dislike of inclement weather. Olivia will need daily exercise and mental stimulation to keep her engaged. Despite their small size both breeds can move quickly so be sure to keep her on leash unless you are in a fenced-in yard or park. It's not unusual for community events to have "weiner races" with adorable Dachshunds scrambling on their little legs to reach the finish line. Like most shelter dogs, Olivia may need a refresher on housetraining. She is likely crate trained. Olivia gets along well with other dogs but has not yet been tested with cats or kids. Because she is a bit shy, Olivia must go to a home that already has another dog. The adoption fee for this dog is $350, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
