!! Come meet Pete and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (JAN 21) from 12-2 pm at the PetSmart in Gaithersburg (218 Kentlands Blvd, Gaithersburg, MD 20878)!!!!!! PETE NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Pete Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound/Hound mix Approximate Age: 3-4 years SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 55 lbs Has Lived With: dogs Currently Living at: DC foster Meet Pete! Pete is around 3-4 years old and is a super-handsome, sweet guy (and everyone knows that hounds are just the BEST)l! Although he was abandoned through no fault of his own, that doesn't seem to bother him one bit. While he is shy with new people and places, he warms up to his people and is a loyal pup. He is great with other dogs...and he doesn't mind cats, either! Pete is ready be your new best friend. He can't wait to get out of the shelter and start a new, better life with someone who loves him! Pete is an all-around great guy -- he gets along well with other dogs and has shared his kennel with a few of them. He also passed his cat test so we think he'd adjust well to living with a kitty! Pete says...Hi there, everyone! They call me Pete, and they say that I'm just the most handsome, sweetest, most loving boy EVER!! Do you have room in your heart and home for a pup like me?? I have a beautiful tricolor coat with that's super-soft…great for everyone to pet me (hint hint). :-) I weigh about 55 pounds (not TOO big), which makes me a perfect size for an apartment, house or condo!! They say I am probably some sort of hound mix…all I know is that I'm a happy pup and I love to play, get lots of pets, and give lots of doggie kisses! Read below for more info on Pete, and email sheilam@luckydoganimalrescue.org ASAP if you're interested in him! Pete is an awesome dog and makes friends with everyone he meets! At around 3-4 years old, he will need lots and lots of exercise to stay happy and healthy. Pete's new person or family will need to make sure he gets lots of socialization and playtime with other dogs and people to keep up the good social skills he has already! And like all dogs we adopt out, he'll need to go to obedience classes to build a strong bond with his people, and help him become a well behaved companion or family member. Like most dogs, Pete may need a refresher on his house training when he gets to a new home. He will also need to go to obedience school so he can continue to be a well-socialized dog! The adoption fee for this dog is $450, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery and heartworm treatment. If you are interested in adopting, please download our Adoption Questionnaire and e-mail it to Sheila at sheilam@luckydoganimalrescue.org ASAP! Thank you for your interest in Lucky Dog Animal Rescue and for helping to save a life! Please visit us online at www.luckydoganimalrescue.org. BE A SPONSOR!!!! Sponsors help Lucky Dog support the many dogs we save. To learn more about sponsorship, please contact Sheila at sheilam@luckydoganimalrescue.org. PETE NEEDS SPONSORS TO HELP WITH HIS HEARTWORM TREATMENT! Heartworm is NOT contagious to people or other pets. After being treated, dogs who were heartworm-positive should suffer no long-term effects as long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. E-mail Sheila at sheilam@luckydoganimalrescue.org to sponsor Pete!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
