ound taking life easy or playing with his toys. He loves to go outdoors and will often take perimeter walks, sniffing and checking things out, or simply lie on the deck and take a snooze. Blake appreciates the good life that he has now. He is a super sweet boy and enjoys the endless touch of human hands caressing him. Blake enjoys human company, but he is not a "Velcro" attachment as some setters can be. Blake is in a foster home with other dogs and he does very well with them. He is also good with children of all ages. This boy would make a great companion dog for almost anyone. ~~Blake came to his foster home with a slight limp in his left leg. After a physical exam and x-rays, the vet reported that Blake has very good range of motion and no sign of hip dysplasia, however, a dislocating knee was discovered. Upon further investigation, it was found that Blake had little muscle mass in his rear legs and was underweight due to poor nutrition. The vet suggested treating the kneecap through proper nutrition and rest allowing the muscles in the hind legs to lengthen and allow the kneecap to return to its proper position. Within 4 short weeks, Blake started feeling better and all visible indications of limping had stopped. After 6 weeks, Blake went back to the vet for his follow up appointment and the vet was very pleased. Blake weighed in at a healthy 52 pounds, his muscle mass had increased and his kneecap had returned to its normal position. Blake has a Stage 1 floating kneecap, but he has learned to adjust his movement to compensate. As long as he maintains his weight between 51-53 pounds through proper nutrition, this sweet boy should have no future problems. ~~Blake is fully house and crate trained. He loves his crate and will often go in there during the day to nap. Blake has not shown any interest in jumping on furniture or people which is part of his adjusting to his knee. He is learning to leash walk and is doing well on a slip lead. Blake is friendly to everyone he meets and greets them with a smile and a wagging tail - hoping those human hands will touch him!! Car rides are also high on his list as long as he gets the backseat so he can stretch out and rest. ~~Blake would probably do best in a home with people that are not overly active; he would not do well with an adopter that is looking for a jogging or hiking partner.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
