doorstep in pretty sorry condition. Many of the dogs that come into SMRS have medical issues that have plagued them for years and years, negatively affecting their quality of life. Maui had been used as a breeding machine which took a toll on her little body along with having allergies from fleas and improper nutrition. We were able to surgically correct her vulva when we had her spayed and she is feeling much better! Her nipples are larger and do have some sagging, but have greatly improved. Now that she is flea free and on a grain free diet her allergies are doing so much better. We anticipate her hair on her back end will start to grow in soon. She will need to stay on her current diet going forward and take her daily apoquel for her ithcies. She also gets a medicated bath once a week. Maui is an active “mischief maker” who loves to play with toys and humans in her foster home. She is picking about who she chooses to like doggie wise and is a dominant girl and for this reason needs to be an ONLY dog. A fenced yard would be fabulous, as Maui also likes the al fresco lifestyle – sunning, lounging, playing, exploring…you get the idea. Maui also loves chewies and other toys, although tops on her list is licking human faces. Maui can get possesive of her bones at times and her new home will need to be cognizant of that issue. She also might be part Gazelle because this girl can jump!! Her new home must be on their toes so she does not injure herself. Maui loves to eat and is fed in her crate so she does not feel threatened by the other dogs while she eats. Maui is working on her potty manners. She is doing really well, but since she was an outside dog she still has some learning to do. While in foster care she wears a diaper inside for any potential pee accidents. She shouldn’t be left alone for long periods of time by owners who work long days outside the home. She is still learning the ropes and like many Frenchies, she can also be stubborn and single-minded. Maui really needs a home where she will receive a lot of attention and have the opportunity to interact with her humans, play to burn off energy and express her social side, and continue to learn the rules of doghood so she can develop into a responsible, well-mannered canine citizen. Her foster mom thinks she could make a fantastic office dog because of her good nature and love love love of humans. Maui is such a special little girl. She is so much smaller than she looks. She is so loyal and playful and will give you kisses until you cannot physically take anymore kisses from her. She had such a rough start to his life, and is finally healthy and happy! We want to find her a family that will love her as much as she is going to love them!! If you agree with us, and think you can provide the interaction, love, attention, love, play time, love and kissable face that our Maui is looking for, please consider applying to make her a member of your family. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
