list- there are plenty of things to choose from to help brighten her day. Dottie needs your help to feel like the queen that she is. poundwishes/ donate/2861466/dottie Update 1/31/19: Dottie has a check up at the dermatologist today. She hasn’t been feeling the best and her tummy has been upset. Dot is still the sweetest gal and always ready for some lovin’! Vet says she doesn’t have zinc deficiency or ichthyosis. The two biopsies don't give us any indication that it's something else. So, for now she is back on the pumpkin and pinto bean diet for 4 weeks. She had some improvement on that diet before. She still needs baths a few times a week. Keep Dot in your thoughts and hope she finds the answer she needs ❤️ ### Update 12/13/18: There are good and bad updates. She is now finally vaccinated, which is a huge step! We also started the antibiotic required before she can begin her heartworm treatment. The plan was to start treatment in January (that's unlikely now). She's grown back hair on her face and ears and was looking and feeling so much better! She was playing and more energetic and you could really tell she just felt better, though her itch really hasn't ever gone down. She has also gained weight, thank goodness! She is now 51.7 lbs. A huge improvement, though she still needs to gain more. Now the bad. Over the last couple of weeks I noticed changes for the worse. Her skin was starting to look worse again and her smell increased. She's always smelled, but it's back to being REALLY bad. She started getting goopy eyes again and her neck, which had previously been mostly dried out and starting to look more normal, developed more goo and yuck. Toes too. Her skin looks awful - super flakey and greasy and thick. The crust is coming back around her eyes, and she has recently lost some little clumps of hair. And you can tell she doesn't feel well. She sleeps curled in a little ball most of the time. Yesterday at her appointment the dermatologist confirmed that her infections are all back. Yeast and staph all over her body and yeast and infection in her ears. The vet is hopeful we can get her turned around again with tweaking her meds and care routine. So, we're back to daily bleach treatments (we were doing every other day) and twice weekly medicated baths (we've been doing those the last month). We're stopping the medicated ear drops for yeast and antibiotics, because they aren't working anymore and switching to a daily ear flush of a water & vinegar mixture. Changing her steroid since she may have become resistant to the most recent one. Adding a second antifungal to the one she's already on. And, the vet still thinks zinc is playing a role here, so we are trying a different kind of zinc and upping the dose if her tummy tolerates it okay. If Dot still has yeast at her next appt in January, we may need to try another hypoallergenic food. The vet tech told us that Dot is literally the hardest case they have ever seen. ### Update 6/21/18: Dottie’s temporary foster home could not part with her so they are now fostering her. She is cat friendly and the sweetest gal despite all the skin issues she has. She had a vet check up this week. She still needs medicated baths twice a week. She is such a loving girl. Stay tuned to watch her progress. ###Update 6/10/2018: Dottie is in a temporary foster home now, and already doing better! ### Meet beautiful Dottie! GRRALL was contacted by a vet tech about a sweet senior Golden whose owner decided to have her euthanized because she could not afford the allergy testing and care her dog so badly needed. Thankfully, the amazing vet tech worked with the owner to surrender the dog so Dottie could receive care and have a second chance. Our dedicated volunteers dropped everything and sprang into action immediately to bring Dottie to GRRALL. Dottie is 9 years old and has endured so much pain and discomfort from lack of care; terrible skin condition and inflammation; massive ear infections caused by untreated allergies, used for breeding, and is heartworm positive. The heartworm condition is especially sad as preventable with a simple prescription injection or monthly pill. We are heartbroken for Dottie as she now has to endure months of heartworm treatment in addition to all her other medical treatments. Dottie has a long road ahead of her. She has already started treatment; drugs, medicated baths, and prescription food to begin the healing process. When Dottie is stable she will move into a foster home where she will be spoiled and continue to receive regular medicated baths. Once Dottie is healthy enough and starting to feel better, after many vet and allergy specialist visits, she will start on her heartworm treatment. Beyond sad and heartbreaking but Dottie will not be alone will have the entire GRRALL team and supporters with her every step of the way. Dottie is a loving, sweet girl, with an incredibly gentle personality. She is already gorgeous in our eyes, but will be stunning once healthy. The vet staff said she has a great appetite in spite of everything else she is going through. She is your typical Golden gal on the inside, but she needs your help to feel like the Golden gal she should be on the outside too! We will keep everyone updated on her progress. Please take a minute to support Dottie and her medical needs, or visit her wishlist- there are plenty of things to choose from to help brighten her day. Dottie needs your help to feel like the queen that she is. poundwishes/donate/2861466/dottie If you are interested in Dottie or any GRRALL dog, please submit an application atgrralliance/applications/adoption-application/

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
