OPTION PENDING. Lacey is a bright-eyed and alert 2 year-old all-American mutt (the best kind!) who’s a great size at only about 32 pounds. She came into a local county dog shelter as a stray. Her owners were located but when the shelter told them that Lacey was heartworm positive, they did not come for her. This sweet girl definitely deserves better humans than that so the shelter reached out to us for help with her. Lacey made the trip to Canine Lifeline to get the lifesaving heartworm treatment that she needed and has just finished up her two month treatment. She did very well with that and is now ready to start looking for a permanent new home. Lacey has been an absolute gem in her foster home and a very patient girl as she went through 60 days of cage rest during her recuperation period. She gets along very well with other dogs and has been very friendly with all people that she meets. Lacey is very food-motivated so the way to this girl’s heart is with a bag of treats! Lacey will need some obedience training as she does like to pull on the leash. An EZ-Walk harness will help her enjoy her walks more as she works on her leash skills. Lacey loves to ride in the car and is a great size at only about 32 pounds. Her adoption fee is $200. She’s spayed, current on monthly heartworm preventative, up to date on vaccinations, wormed, on flea preventative, and microchipped. All Canine Lifeline adoptions come with a two-week trial period to make sure it’s a great match before the adoption is finalized. Please email info@caninelifeline.org if you’re interested in Lacey. An approved application is required before we set up meets with any of our dogs. All of our dogs come to us from county dog pounds so we have no history on them. We also have no foster homes with young children so aren’t comfortable placing any of them in a home with children less than 4-5 years of age. We try to respond to inquiries within 24-48 hours so if you haven’t heard from us within that time frame, please check your junkmail or spam folder to make sure our reply hasn’t landed in there. Lacey’s heartworm treatment cost about $650. If you’d like to make a donation to help with her care so that we may save another dog in the future, please do so on our website at www.caninelifeline.org or by sending a check to Canine Lifeline, PO Box 25742, Garfield Hts OH 44125. Thank you from Lacey and Canine Lifeline! Please visit our website at www.caninelifeline.org to see more photos of Lacey and to submit an online application. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
