ots, on heartworm preventative and is microchipped. Colt is a perfect gentleman and does his job as office greeter extremely well! We're not really sure how old he is, probably at least three years, and he appears to be a Labrador Retriever mix. One thing we're certain of: he is the sweetest boy and will be a super addition to any household! He loves everyone (big, little and in-between) and everything and welcomes all those he meets with a smile - those he knows and strangers alike - human and canine. He's fine with small animals and finds kitties interesting in a good way. He's house trained, walks fine on leash and is good in the car (he's used to being crated) - he'd love to be your errand buddy and road trip sidekick for sure! He likes to play with toys, but would rather just hang out with his human or doggie friends rather than engage in play. He's generally quiet unless there's a treat being offered and then he barks with excitement. Colt likely has some arthritis from his orthopedic injuries, so he is looking for a home that will not expect too much physical activity out of him. Leisurely walks are great for him, but he should be expected to be a running buddy, or participate in rough play with other dogs. He would love to go hiking, but may have a little stiffness after such adventures. A home with fewer stairs than more would be best for him, and also a rubber-backed throw rug would be great to help give him traction when jumping off the sofa. If you're into leisurely strolls and stopping to smell the roses, Colt's your guy! We think he and his new human(s) will have fun at basic obedience classes since he's such a social dude. Convinced Colt's the missing piece to your family puzzle? Fill out an application today and his people will get right back to you! Colt's Story: When first found out in the country, it was thought he had been shot, but instead it was discovered that pins were working their way out of his leg from a previous break. He does have just a bit of arthritis, but it doesn't interfere with his love of life and his sweet disposition. Medical Note: This dog has been treated for a severe orthopedic injury. He has healed fully from that injury and does not show signs of discomfort when engaging in mild activity, but has shown some discomfort after moderate to intense activity. Daily joint supplements are recommended, and occasional or possibly daily anti-inflammatory medications may be necessary to keep him comfortable, depending upon his activity level in his new home. He could likely benefit from regular laser and/or massage therapy, but these are not necessary at this time. Medical Note: This dog has been treated for heartworm disease with melarsomine injections. Once treatment is completed and the dog tests negative for microfilaria, the dog will be cleared to resume normal activity and able to be adopted. Untreated heartworm disease can cause lasting damage to the heart, lungs and arteries, and can affect the dog’s health and quality of life even after the parasites are gone, possibly presenting as medical complications and/or new conditions in the future. This dog showed no symptoms of heartworm disease before or during treatment. A good resource for more information on heartworm disease is: .heartwormsociety/pet-owner-resources/heartworm-basics . Please check with your vet if you should have any questions or concerns about this condition, and discuss any concerns you may have with your SOS Adoption Counselor. Adoption Fee: $585 To apply for this dog, fill out an adoption application on our website: .sosarl/aa/ **Additional info you should know - For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label. Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption. There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
