e on shots, on heartworm preventative and is microchipped. This quiet, handsome dude is Max Solis! Max appears to be a Labrador Retriever/Terrier mix about a year old. He was dumped on the side of the road with three other dogs. That was the past and Max is looking up to see what wonderful things the future holds for him! He is crate trained and walks well on a leash. Because he can be a bit timid and cautious when meeting new people, and he is protective, he's not a good match for a home with small children or a lot of new people coming and going. He's very smart and once he's learned to trust someone, he is a friendly fellow. To set him up for success, his new family should plan to gradually expand his world by introducing him to new people slowly over a few months and with lots of high value treats (eg, pepperoni). Max likes toys, is playful and likes the water. He has been in small play groups and done well with most other dogs, but he would also love to be your one and only! We strongly recommend that all our dogs attend obedience classes, not only because you get to learn commands together and it offers an opportunity for confidence building and socialization for the dog, but because it helps to strengthen that ever-important bond between the dog and his human family. And it’s lots of fun! A well-mannered, obedient dog will be welcomed most anywhere you take him. Max already knows "down" and would love to learn some more with you! Though a fenced yard is an ideal place for a dog to romp and play safely, for Max the gate had better be super secure and Max-proof 'cause he can figure out how to open them! If a yard isn't an option then lots of daily leash walks and opportunities to play off-leash in a dog park is the next best thing. A tired dog is a good dog! Dogs of all ages also benefit from mental stimulation – think puzzle toys and games. Max is affectionate, eager to please, even-tempered and gentle. He acts interested when meeting new dogs or going to new places. Can you offer Max the bright future he's longing for? Fill out an application today - don't make him wait any longer! Adoption Fee: $425 To apply for this dog, fill out an adoption application on our website: www.sosarl.org/aa/ **Additional info you should know - For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label. Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption. There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
