o curious little girl. She takes her job of protecting her family from those furry little critters (aka squirrels) very seriously! This cold weather doesn't slow her down one bit either! In fact she resembles another furry critter (the rabbit) while playing outdoors and trying to find the perfect place to relieve herself - it really is quite comical to watch her. One of her favorite past times is playing with squeaker toys, not only does she love the sound they make, she loves to just carry them around and have them near her. When all the fun and games are done, she really enjoys chillin' on the couch with her family and she loves to cuddle! Give her a spot on your bed and she will sleep through night without a peep. True to her breed, Nikki does exhibit some dominance so either being an only dog or with a dog that isn't as stubborn as her would be best. She hasn't been around cats yet, that we are aware of, but with her prey drive caution is advised. A fenced in yard to keep her and the critters safe is required, and should be at least 4 feet tall. She may only be 12 pounds, but she can easily jump a 3 foot fence and it's nearly impossible to redirect her once she is focused on something. Nikki is very attentive and will bark when she sees something interesting or hears a noise that she needs to find the source of, so likely not a good apartment or shared housing girl. Nikki truly is a fun little girl that would bring some entertainment to your home. If she sounds like a good fit for you, please consider meeting her! If you are interested in Nikki, please fill out an adoption application at www.ruffstartrescue.org. An adoption application is the best way to show your interest in an animal. Once we receive your application, a placement coordinator will be in contact with you as soon as possible. Please check out our website, www.ruffstartrescue.org for more details and additional pictures on any of our animals! All Ruff Start dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, up to date on age appropriate vaccines, microchipped, dewormed, and on monthly flea/tick and heartworm prevention (dogs) as well as heartworm tested (dogs). Ruff Start Rescue is a foster based rescue. Animals are located in homes throughout Minnesota. We do not have a facility where animals are kept. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
