eglected, and made to fend for themselves. They were abandoned in a home for several months and the only face they saw was a neighbor who would throw food through the front door. Albert and Einstein were extremely fearful when they arrived in our care. After they finally began to open up, we discovered both boys tolerated very little from humans, dogs, and cats. Everything overwhelmed them and they both reacted as if they were backed into corners when humans or animals refused to give them their space. Having bit both humans and dogs, we sought help from a board-certified behaviorist and sent Einstein to a trainer for 30 days. We also had him in several homes and have been able to determine his triggers and his needs. He is currently with the president of the rescue who has extensive experience with aggressive dogs. She reports that Einstein is one of the best dogs she's ever had!! The key to Einstein's success is his environment and his person. He needs a stable home with someone, preferably a woman, who has an alpha personality. (Too much traffic in/out of a home is too overwhelming for him. His abuse and neglect was at the hands of a man, so he remains a little sensitive with some men. He also needs someone who can give him clear guidance and spend lots of time with him as he is a lover, a snuggle bug, and just wants to be with you.) Einstein would also do best in a home as the only pet. (He is currently living with four other dogs and must be contained in a different room whenever dogs and humans are eating or treats are given. He exhibited a good bit of jealous behavior whenever a dog would come into "his space". This has since resolved and he has learned that his current foster is able to pet more than one dog at a time. This is where someone with an alpha personality would do best by him.) We have learned that Einstein will allow his triggers to build up before he lashes out. And we are happy to say that he has not had any aggressive episodes whatsoever in his current foster home. He is quickly correctable, eager to learn, and loves to love and be loved. We must be extremely particular in placing Einstein in his furever home, as we will not set him up for failure. Einstein cannot go to a home with senior citizens, children, or where grandchildren visit often. If you are a strong, independent person who is active and loves quirky Poms, this guy is for you. Einstein will be the best dog you've ever had too...if you are the right person for him. We will send Einstein out on a one-month trial period to ensure it's a good fit. Adopter must be willing to have patience and return Einstein to the Harrisburg area in the event it doesn't work out. Einstein weighs 17 pounds and is ready to move on from his past! He is neutered, current on vaccines, microchipped, and has been heartworm/lyme tested. You can follow his progress on our Facebook page or apply to adopt at PomPaws. Pawsitively Pom Rescue has a set $250 adoption fee.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
